Might be more something for the CSL version of the M2 ?

Remember the side vents on the 1M rear bumper ? As we know, these mimic 'air vents', but in reality are blocked with plastic inserts. These only serve the purpose to accommodate the look of a wider E82 bumper resulting from the wider E9X M3 track. Aesthetics as function.

The M2 is getting side vents à la 1M. Rumor has it that these will feature rear reflectors inside (à la X5 M and X6 M).

And what function do you expect it to fill on the CSL?

I think some people on here have TOO HIGH expectations of the M2 & M2 CSL that may or may not even come.

"Hmm, this shadow right there... It's kinda different to the M-ZF 8458 car we saw yesterday. Probably an M2 CSL?!"

I think it'd be pretty cool if we could just see a teaser already. We've played the same conversations over and over and over. 3 months away and we've got nothing.

Word.

I keep looking at the M3/4 and once again toying with the idea of picking up a used E92.
The wife wants to test drive Porsches and Audi because she doesn't like the fart can exhaust of the M3.

I agree that teasers are way overdue already. Not like we are getting an exact replica of the GT6 in a CSL format. I'm sure get the car has been thoroughly castrated as to not overshadow its larger sibling so what's the big secrecy about???? :

Very much agree. Just note that some people (me) weren't necessarily speculating that the car was an M2 CSL. SCOTT26 originally said that the M2 would draw inspiration from the Vision GT concept. It was later that he clarified that the more aggressive aero would only appear on a hypothetical CSL variant.

That's kind of a pattern with the leaks we hear, and I'm not blaming SCOTT26. Anyone who runs a business knows that plans aren't set in stone. You react to the market and the feedback you get from your teams.

It often takes a while for everyone to come up to speed on the latest information.

Refresh on my comments about the "Sibling"
As many seem to be getting ahead of yourselves...

.The concept is to show an internal idea on mixing the past philosophy of CSL with today's advancement in materials to revive the lucrative CSL insignia for the ultimate M models.
Which means that the cars will be more definitive than their standard versions even more. The first example to take the exclusive road will be the all new BMW M4 GTS which will be shown as a preview concept at Pebble Beach in August.

Essentially the M4 GTS will be a production model of the BMW M4 Safety Car which was the M4 GTS "Concept". In 2016 BMW M will provide its first look at concepts of two models which will wear the CSL badge as well as more pronounced bodywork, Efficiency technology and lightweight features to illustrate exciting and lucrative possibilities for progressive performance.

No (at least not for Joe Public).

Rather put your money on September 17, 2015 - Frankfurt Motor Show. So, less than 3 months from now.

Well in the quote that that comment quoted, he states that the M4 will be at Pebble Beach in a way that suggests it will be the only debut there

What I'm getting at? You're imagining it. The camoflauge is doing its job on the black mule and messing with your eyes. There's no fender cutout. Why would there be on a street car that doesn't have a rear mounted engine. Think about it. Look at the white test mule and compare. Several people have already discounted the rear vent. The biggest question to ask is - why would the car warrant one?
There could be air intakes for brake cooling (like on the C5, C6, C7 Z06) or diff cooling, like with the C7 Stingray's intakes on top of the rear haunches. The Viper also has diff cooling ducts on the side directly behind the rear window. Even though for the M2 I doubt that that there are intakes. But, I wish for it. The thing is, if there were, and if they were functional, then they would not be covered up or closed off.
And there have been front engined racing cars from BMW's past with rear intakes.

I have no confidence that a vent will appear there on the vanilla M2. What's been said regarding form and function does make sense, even if we have some counter examples. A non-functional vent on the front side of the fender would be pure bullshit. BMW can get away with faux vents like the ones on the 1M bumper because of aesthetic requirements, but a vent on the front side of the rear fender would likely increase Cd, thus degrading fuel economy.

Not to mention, AFAIK, no production M-car has ever come with functional brake ducts. There are lots of aftermarket options, but you'd expect them on the fronts long before the rears.

Right, so how is anyone supposed to know if they should hold out for the CSL version or if a base M2 will be enough?. Contracts and deposits to start building the car will happen before the CSL is revealed. Can you tell me how much more the CSL is likely to be? Will it be the only M2 that gets a CF roof? Will it get an S engine?

I'm starting to get pretty annoyed like others why BMW is being so secretive on the base M2 and I'm about to pull the pin hold onto my E46 and look elsewhere. Pull the camo off already!
It ain't looking that special to be honest as we already know it's running the N55, no hood bulge, boring colours and most likely no CF roof! Externally, aside from drilled rotors wider body and slightly more aggressive bumpers, how does it differ from an m235i? It's a proper M car so make it look like one!

I feel like some of you guys have lost the plot and really need to go on holiday or something

Honestly though, do you think it's BMW's problem that you can't decide if you should wait for this so called CSL (which might not even exist)? I think it's a little crazy that you expect the marketing department to hold your hand and tell you what to do with your money.

And there's a set schedule for everything. That's how it works with EVERY car launch. It'll be released when it's supposed to be released. There will be online teasers when there are supposed to be released. You guys being impatient is not really their problem.

You are fortunate to have a nice e46 M3 to play with at least. Just enjoy it until the M2 comes out

I can only tell you details as I hear them.

The IAA will have many surprises, both for product and future innovation as a question of priority.

Fingers crossed that it is revealed there. I plan to be at IAA in person.

It'll be a shame if the car isn't at Frankfurt. That's the perfect stage for it. I'm just getting a little nervous that BMW has unveiled so many cars that (X1, 7er, Clubman...) that they'd want to save the M2 for another show.

If it is at IAAA, I hope you know we fully expect a full write-up from you. Considering how great your European Delivery thread is, you are the perfect man for the job haha

A, somewhat, startling confession, at this stage.
And enlightening. I'm going to have to crank up my skepticism a few notches.

Thanks for pointing that out.
