Based on the concept drawings from BMW, and the most recent releases, I think everyone is expecting something more along the lines of the new headlight and grill design lines we've seen on the updated 5, 6, and 3 series. The F20 front end design was an intermediate design, IMO. It was an attempt at a refresh that retained the "bug eyed" nature of the 1-series. I don't think we'll see the same on the 2-series. It's too much of an outlier.

2013 (E82) 135i length: 172.2 in

2006 (E46) M3 length: 176.9 in

That gives them almost 5 inches to grow, while still remaining shorter than an E46 M3. I'm optimistic.

Great to know. This car can be a real hit with enthusiasts.

If you're in the know, you should understand that the 4 cylinder E30 M3 was quicker than the 6 cylinder 325i, even in a straight line. It's little inline four made over 200 horsepower and would eventually make ~240 when the 325i was only making 170 (I think).

All the rumors of a turbocharged four cylinder M2 have also pointed to ~350hp so, while I can understand someone's preference for a straight six (I like them a lot more than inline fours), there's no need to worry about acceleration performance. The M2 will be lighter and more powerful than the M235i.

Mercedes' CLA45 AMG's 2.0T motor is already known to make 354 horsepower, so I see no reason why BMW couldn't match or even exceed that.

Concept with a 2er Concept to get customers and BMW fans accustomed to the new designation strategy.
Since the 4er introduction there has been hardly any negative response about the decision to change the name of the 3er Coupe.

Which is possibly due to the fact that the strategy make sense when you actually seen the concept car.

That render looks pretty good. I do hope the M2 comes out looking somewhat like that. I also hope it has E46 dimensions.

I'm skeptical that it will come with a turbo 4. It doesn't make sense that the M235i would have a straight 6 and the M2 would have a turbo 4, even if the M4 has a turbo 6. BMW can always cut ~80hp from the M2 engine and further differentiate it by really turning out a great chassis. A ~340hp turbo straight 6 with a fantastic chassis would make this car fantastic.

edit: What if it came with a detuned version of the N55 derivative that is supposed to come with the M4? OMG, a ~450hp ~3200 pound M car, with nothing but a tune and bolt ons. If this happens, I'll sell my first born for the car.

My possible purchase of this car depends on one thing: STEERING. I want feel (not just weight) and road noise. I know it can be done with electric steering, so that is not an excuse. If it is not damn close to perfect in this regard I will probably just buy another E46. Hell I might even just keep my current one. Because that is the one area where a small BMW must shine.

Please pass this on to whoever makes these decisions. As it really is important in a car like this. BMW engineers are the best in the industry I know they can do it!

I am speaking in round numbers here so please do not flame me. The M4 is supposed to have the weight of the E46 M3. Current M3 around 3700 pounds and E46 M3 around 3450. The 250 pound weight loss is supposed to come from light weight subframes for the front and rear.

I think I heard the subframes will be out of aluminum which would improve chassis stiffness, and with the usual M suspension components in aluminum and maybe a few light weight body parts.

The current N20 weighs around 150 pounds less than the N55 and is shorter improving weight distribution. The M2 is supposed to use the 1M recipe of stuffing the M3 subframes and suspension right into the M2.

With 400 pounds(250 from subframes and 150 from the engine) gone from the 1M it is very possible to see a 3000 pound or less M2 with much better weight distribution and lower polar moment, all great for responsive handling.

I love that the inline six is so smooth and well balanced that it does not require balance shafts with there added weight that effect engine responsiveness, though BMW does it with lower weight than most. So I do like the idea of an M2 with an inline 6.

But with the right 4 cylinder at around 350 hp, 3000 pounds of weight, and better weight distribution, this may be the most fun street M BMW has made.

..is this M235i have new sheet metal? I assume this is a revised current 135i coupe with new headlights / bumpers / rockers not a complete redesign?

The M2 like the 1er M Coupe before it is not just about the numbers.
so the m235i will have 6 and the m2 will have 4? that is just retarded.

True. I guess my post above was just negated LOL.
BUT - 350hp with an i6 and 3150 pounds would be a bit more fun.

Wonderful! I should have known a new "number (2-series) " would introduce a new design... but have been absorbed with the 4-series

Excited! Thanks Jason

I am in love with my girls 135i. If the 2 accomplishes what the f30 did to the e90 this car would be WOW.

The renders of the m2 above dont look that great. There is another thread in the news section with an awesome render of an m2 grand coupe in estoril blue that looks a lot more amazing. So amazing its on my homescreens everywhere. Would post the pic but this bpost app sucks lol
