Hey all,

I have owned my OG LCI M2 for over 4 years now and it has been my daily driver. The car is approaching 75,000 miles. I am starting to think about my next car as the M2 has been a fantastic vehicle and I wish it could stay in its pristine condition forever. However, I am noticing oil leaks, check engine issues with misfires, and occasional malfunctions with the LED rear lights. These are all fixable problems but it makes me wonder what the next step should be. I still love and appreciate the car every time I start it up, but the initial excitement is fading after 4 years.

I had the opportunity to drive a friend's M5Comp xdrive and it was incredibly impressive. I am interested in a G8X Competition xdrive, but the prices are still high. So, my dilemma is whether I should sell my M2 now while it still holds some value and the issues are manageable, or keep using it until the prices of the G8X drop to the $70s.

Have you tried a G87 M2? You can get a new one for around $70K. That is what I would do unless you need a bigger car.

Fix it, then sell it to keep prices high. The only current car that remotely interests me is a (FL5) CTR (or possibly the ITS) even tho its fwd. G series cars are ugly, expensive, and too powerful; audis look good but suck; and i have no idea wtf MB is doing. Take a risk on the italians or british, or deal with the fcking abysmal quality of american cars. That leaves lexus only, really; RC, IS300+, or LC are your choices (and they all make you look retired). I say, unless you are legit commuting, do the maintenance and keep it; you’ve already shown that the ride doesn’t bother you. The f87 is a special car and you owe it to every kid that might grow up to want a EV to keep it on the road. I fcked up and bought a golf; don’t be like me.

I think, honestly, the F87 is going to be the car that most guys regret getting rid of the most. The total package is just off the charts for price, sound, reliability, modability, and fun.

Buy whatever suits your fancy, but before you do, make sure you won't be looking for your F87 in a G87, GT4 or M5 because you won't find it. The F87 experience is one in a hundred, just like the Exige, which is why I own both.

The logical (German) next step seems like GT4 or Cayman GTS. However, I am also eyeing Lotus Emira or Giulia Quadrifoglio as the next car.

Nevertheless, with kids being taken into account (and F87's usable back seats), I think Giulia will take the crown even if it is not the one I would prefer in my heart

When I was originally looking for a new car the quadrifoglio was on the short list.
But the spec I wanted with the nicer seats plus carbon pack was close to 50k (GBP) but when I see them I still really like them.
Don’t know how I’d like it compared to the OG m2 I have now.


Seems like a Porsche is the next car ALot of M2 owners go on to but I don’t know how well OP would get on Dailying one.

I’m waiting for the GT4 price to bottom out then move into one

Truthfully unless your life has changed to the point where your car requirements have changed I don't see any reason to get rid of the M2. I've played with the idea myself but there's nothing close to the M2 and I always come back to keeping it. I have two small kids, both in car seats and the M2 fits them with ease, while not feeling like a big car. The "new" cars out are not appealing to me because they are huge and too much tech for my liking, at least for a fun car. It's natural to look at an M3 from the M2 with kids but ultimately I decided I'd rather deal with putting an infant and toddler in the back seats and have the m2 than a G80. Then factor in added cost, and I wondered why I even spent time thinking about it. If you have smaller kids and/or are planning on it, for me, there is not a more fun car you can get.

I have a 8Y RS3 coming in April, that might replace the M2C. The current M2/M3 is too ugly to consider. Nothing at MB excites me, and with Porsche you have to spend well over 100k to get anything remotely as fun as the M2, so that's out. Drove a friends new stock CTR and had so much fun. Best manual transmission ever, excellent handling and decent power, FWD be damned. If the RS3 doesn't impress me when it comes in, I'll just save the money and get one of those.

You can't tell these BMW guys about Porsche, most of them consider the brand the holy grail, and in fact many are with BMW just waiting for their chance to jump ship when they can afford to.

What they don't know is that Porsche cars are bi-polar; you either get the top, or you're at the bottom. Sterility rules the day with most of those cars, and the Porsche tax is even worse than BMW.

They'll figure it out, when it's too late.

The only thing I’d trade in my F87 for is a lower mileage F87. But I greatly value the more raw and analog experience. I just don’t think there is another BMW that is as fun to drive on a daily basis.

So in the end it’s just being honest with yourself about want you want out of your driving experience. There is no wrong answer as long as what you buy fits what you value.

Saw the Giulia QV mentioned a few times so thought I would share my experience. I owned a 2022, bought new, for just over a year. They are truly special cars when right, and I still to this day have not seen another one on the road (although I have seen a few Stelvio QVs). Several people where I live had no idea what it was, and the few who did loved to strike up a conversation.

QVs are absolutely let down by AR service departments, which are few and far between and are generally regarded as below average. I do not believe in calling all Alfas or QVs unreliable which seems to be the usual go-to. Several forum members have had trouble-free ownership experiences while many others have not. It appears to be extremely hit or miss. Unfortunately, I fell into the latter camp. My car visited the dealer 5 times within the first 12 months, and that includes a spell where they kept the vehicle for 6 weeks due to a repeating electrical issue that would lock the car in limp mode. The dealership was ultimately unable to solve the problem, and a few local indy shops refused to look at the car just because it was an Alfa. I decided to cut my losses and moved on from it shortly afterwards.

QVs depreciate like a rock which makes used examples look fairly tempting. This is not novel advice, but if you did move on to a QV, I would be absolutely terrified owning one out of warranty. Just my opinion and experience having owned both cars.

I have zero regrets moving to the OG M2, and due to its lower but more usable power and smaller dimensions (combined with the 6MT for mine), I actually have more fun driving it around town. YMMV

Make a change when you are running to something new — when something sparks that same passion that drew you to the M2. Don’t make a change because you’re running from leaks and other minor items. Otherwise you’ll be trading a car with a set of quirks/issues for another with its own set of quirks and won’t really have achieved the stated goal.

Only car I will replace the F87 with is a Cayman GTS (I’ve owned most perfomance cars WORTH owing under $100k & driven most the rest). Oh & I modify the shit out of all of them (all cars can be improved upon).

I replaced mine with a 8Y RS3. I *really* like it -- has decent modern tech, nice interior, great engine/exhaust sound (that 5 cylinder sounds like a baby V10). I also like the adaptive suspension and valved exhaust -- can be comfortable and quiet when you want it or firm and rowdy if you like -- all at the push of a button. The DSG isn't as fun as my old 6-speed, but it shifts pretty damn quick and is better than something you might drive with a torque converter. Doesn't look as amazing as my OG F87, but in turbo blue with the flared fenders it doesn't look half bad either. Oh, and seeing as I like small cars, I love the fact that it basically fits in the same footprint as my old M2, but also gives me back doors to make kid hauling easier.

Personally I have always considered getting back into my JDM roots: GTR, GR86/BRZ, MX-5, NSX, and even the RCF. But I probably will never sell the F87.
