Don't be worried, its just a clutch inspection opening. The plastic plug is loose and cant believe mine has stayed in this long. There is no seal. Just buy another and pop it in no worries.

I'm no mechanic but it's not a gearbox but a bell-housing and they purposely don't make it enclosed for cooling and noise/vibration as well as inspection. Think of it as more like a half-shaft that has sealed joints on both ends. A dry clutch on a motorcycle can be exposed - admittedly a bit different and also similar in many ways for cooling and getting rid of dust.
