I def really like the 1m and if you were lucky enough to get one that's awesome. But are you going to be able to justify buying a 55k 2011 1m over a m2. I know the 1m will be worth more long term but that's if you don't drive it. I want to drive the sh*t out of my m2 and I will keep it forever

Here is a quote from a guy that just sold an E30 M3 this week.

> My 145k mile 89 alpine black with Dot R hood, Fender, and some overspray on
rad support, non operating A/C but otherwise very very clean sold privately for 37k.<

Tell me again about low mileage cream puff?

FYI
The e30 M3 sold for $34,995 in 1988-1991 and excellent condition low mileage examples are going for crazy money.

There were approximately 5000 E30 M3s imported to the US. Obviously the 1M doesn't have the same pedigree but when you talk about just 740 cars and look at its value now vs when available new it's clearly in the same rare air as other special cars like the S54 Z3M, Alpina Z8, E36 M3 CSL and E90 M3 GTS , Z4M and E46 M3 CSL.

///M and P cars are two entirely different market segments. ///M are more practical since they can comfortably fit 4 plus golf bags and groceries. Then there's the price differential. While I find myself checking out P cars because they easily outperform ///M cars, I know I won't get one until my kids are out of the house or my take home pay jumps by $50k.

Also, do you know what the yearly sale figures are for the Cayman/Boxter? You'd be surprised at how low they are. There's not a mass exodus of ///M owners jumping ship and for everyone one that does there's probably at least 5 new ///M owners replacing them.

While there are many new and very good competing offerings, there will still be a great demand for the M2.

BMW M is pitching M2 to enthusiasts, just read it on their site. My point was that M used to have some cool impractical cars such as e46 csl, z3m, 1m and many of those enthusiasts left the brand as there is no smaller lighter vehicle from M. The interesting vehicle would be 3000lbs/300hp. Right now we have Cayman as the king of the segment with C7, and then brz with good cassis but underpowered. Also many F80 owners track with P because bmw hpde has mostly e36 and e46 m3 that are much slower. M3 is practical due to size but still heavy. When new Cayman comes out it will rule the segment again unless M2 can challenge it. We shall see but 500lbs delta will hurt. Now if there is M2 csl it will get much more interesting. Used Cayman S is a great value in my opinion.

The 718's turbo 4 hurts it way more than the extra weight hurts the M2, IMHO.

+1... I bet Porsche does an outstanding job with it. People confuse number of cylinders and displacement with performance.

It has nothing to do with performance. I'm sure that the turbo boxer 4 will perform just fine.

But I don't want to spend $60k on a Porsche and have it sound like a Subaru.

A Subaru has a distinctive sound because of the type of motor, as a boxer motor, but of course the sound is also very much related to down pipes, blow off valves, header and other exhaust pieces. Not sure why in the world you would assume that a Porsche motor would sound exactly like a Subaru.

Does the ford GT 350 knife edged v8 make you think of a Ferrari ?

I agree with gthal Apparently people also confuse engine sounds with number of cylinders as well.

Have you seen the Mercedes AMG GT-S live?
In that case, do you still think engines with forced induction cant sound awesome?

I drive the shit out of my 1M and will be keeping it forever....and yes if I was in the market NOW I'd still buy a $55k 1M over an M2.

I think for people who want a car for 3-4 years they should get an M2 with a warranty, etc....but if they want the full fat, most unfiltered sports car BMW has made in many years that they will KEEP for many years then the 1M is the ticket.

for leasing and short term purchases definitely the M2.

I certainly haven't heard a turbo 4 that sounds as good as the current NA 6 cylinder in the Cayman.

Lol, you're too much man. You remind me of myself at 16 when I thought I could out race Corvettes in my Honda Prelude because it was my car. At least wait until someone drives the M2 before you give purchase advice regarding driving dynamics between the two.

Remember when BMW was going to limit production of the i8 and then decided to produce on demand?

That could easily happen here...

From your lips to Leipzig's ear, because sitting at #10 on my local dealer's waiting list, I wonder whether I have an ice cube's chance in hell of getting my M2 before end of calendar year 2016, even if some of those ahead of me fall by the wayside before buying.

Like I said in another thread : Was talking to my BMW salesman yesterday. According to him, only 2,500 units will be produced of the M2.

Perhaps in the first year. And of course the sales people would tell you a much lower overall number.

Was thinking the same. It's the number one trick in the salesmanbook. Anyway I'll stick to my original plan, find myself a nice 1 M coupe.
