M240i (loaded w/ LSD) or M2

I have an M240i on order with all the options incl. LSD but I just found an M2 similarly priced. Which one would you choose?

How will the 2 be used?

Daily driver = M240i
.
.
Garage Queen & W/E Runner = M2
.
.
Tough problem to have.

We're you able to add LSD to the build sheet for port install? Or dealer install?

I added it to my build but I was told they no longer offer port install so having the dealer do it.

M240i. The M2 is just too much muchness for me. It's always cranked up to "11". I am fine with occasionally cranking my car up to 9 and leaving it at 6 most of the time. The world is not a racetrack.

Really, what I truly wanted was an M-sport THP Premium Pkg 228i without a sunroof. More than fast enough, more efficient, lighter on it's feet and $5K cheaper. But BMW wouldn't sell me that car, so I settled for an M235i. The extra 90hp was fun in Germany, and a complete waste in the US.

Depends what you want. The M2, like all 'real' M cars, has a bone-rattling ride, but is more of an enthusiast's car. Is this a lease or a purchase? If a purchase, which will be worth more after 4 or 5 years? That may or may not matter to you.
Really, these are two very different cars, not really comparable on any sort of equal footing.

not to sidetrack this thread, but I agree with everything you said. I find the M235 just has too much power for my needs (and sounds absolutely glorious), and if I could do it again, I'd likely purchase the 228 spec'd just the same way as yours, or at least seriously consider it as an option!

Depends. The m240 is the all around better car to live with. But if you love track days and the mrs. Drives the latest and greatest cute yute then the m2.

The suspension on the M240i in comfort mode is about the limit for what I would enjoy for long (+1 hour) drives. Not that I want something softer, but if it were stiffer, I'd probably get really fatigued. Looking forward to both quick drives around the city and the occasional long commute for work makes me recommend the M240i. That, and the red seats, which spruce up and otherwise bland interior. If you're getting the LSD, the performance gap is even smaller - you can upgrade the suspension if you want to track it, and the engine will likely provide more tuning ability.

Think south of the Mason Dixon line the M2 is more compelling as a DD. Up north at least a 235/240 xDrive on the crap roads with bad weather outperforms an M2 many days out of the year. My brother for instance had a 911 C4S that he ended up spending $10K on replacing rims and tires and never drove the thing anywhere close to full capability. That's in another league from M2 even but 235/240 is about all you really need to enjoy yourself safely on public roads at least around here. If you want to do track days or blast around wide open roads down south that's a completely different story.

I had a similar debate with myself and went for the M240i. Mainly because my wife will drive the car pretty often and the ride is just so much better on the street. I have always dreamed of buying a proper m car but i don't feel like i compromised much going with the M240i.

I havent driven M2, but I think M235i suspension is abit too soft on Sport setting. I used to have e46 M3 and S2000, both had a great ride quality and performance.

I do like that M235i has 2 settings, I always switch to Comfort when I know roads are bad. I think M2 doesn't have this feature....or am I wrong ?

Similarly priced, m2 all day and all night. Resale value on M2 should return better results.

I had the same question.. I've been in M cars all the time, but this time, I decided on the M240 over the M2.. cheaper for me, cheaper insurance, I don't track it so seems pointless having the additional bits.. yeah the M2 looks nicer on the outside, but the M240 is a lot of fun to drive and insurance is better.. UK roads = nicer option for me (in country)

What are your final thoughts ?

D

I'd say if it's going to be a daily, m240 is the way to go. If it's a track car/weekend only car, then M2 any day of the week, especially if priced very close.
