I priced out a new M235 with the same options as my 135is and it was about $1,000 more also. The only real difference of note is that the 135is has the PE and the M235 would not, so factor that in. But, the real thing to keep in mind is you can't really go off the MSRP on the 135is because even a year ago when I got mine, you could easily get $4-5k off sticker.

There are actually still some brand new ones around now, too, and dealers are taking $8-9k off sticker on them. And that's their advertised price. I imagine it will be awhile before they start taking large discounts off the M235s and knowing BMW dealers, they may even try to charge over MSRP in the beginning with the first few they get. Point is, it's not exactly apples to apples when you figure what you'd actually pay out the door, though it's essentially the same N55 engine with nearly identical PPK tune.
my prediction is that the 228 will sell quite well, but the M235 will NOT.

the 135is was a limited affair and were tough to sell out. most of the cars sticker red around $50k. the number of people willing to spend $50k on a performance coupe is VERY SMALL. Just ask Audi about their TT and its sales figures in the US.

most people looking at the M235 will just think "I should just get a 335". the 1er was unique in its segment....the 2er is far less unique.

For what it's worth, my sticker was almost exactly $50k and I would NOT have gotten it I don't think if I actually had to pay that much. $45k was perrrrrfect.

I think most people completely balk at the notion of our cars costing $50k though from reactions and comments I've seen on the forum. Also crazy that my 2008 135 was $36k in comparison, though it was a complete stripper, like my ex-wife.

Absolutely this. I'm not saying the 2 looks bad, it just looks more similar to all the other new BMWs. The 1 had a little more of its own personality (even more so now).

I think this is pretty accurate. The M235i (which should be 235is ) is priced just a smidge cheaper than the 135is and in my eyes doesn't include quite as many goodies. I think most people will look at the price of the 228 with M-Sport and think...why would I spend another $12k or more on a M235i?

I guess I'll need to see it in person or on the road.. but I would pass on that styling.
I would rather go the new 4er or late model 335.. etc.
or maybe I'll keep my 135i forever.

Pff, stealing the video I posted, eh? =P It's sad how many times I watched that back in 2008 waiting for the 135 to arrive and see one (and mine) in person for the first time. Oh that Sedona Red.

All me baby! Sadly, I just can't envision a Euro trash guy getting up there and trying to defend and explain all the lines and design cues on the M235. I know the 135 is probably more plain and simpler looking, but I think the design just flows better and is more cohesive than the 2. I could be tempted by an M2 though, if they decide to make one. I do want that damn 16 speaker, 600 watt harman kardon new sound system in the M235 though that's the same $875 priced option as ours. =(

Yeah I'm definitely underwhelmed by our HK system but I definitely consider myself a bit of an audiophile. My car is a lease (for now) but the only thing that would prevent me from buying it out is if there was an M2 by then...and it would have to be REALLY excellent, and without electric steering.

Im excited to see what the M2 looks like as well. I wont wait like I did on the 1M. I think they should call it the 2M, just because.

I'm with you guys and the better HK system in the 2-series. HOWEVER, I just can't believe how little time I actually spend with the stereo on... and how often when it is on that I end up turning it off. I'll be listening to it even less once the weather warms up and I can roll with the windows down. The PE with the PPK2 is so enjoyable! Not to mention the fart from the PE when the DCT upshifts under throttle

I think they will eventually field an electric steering system with excellent feedback. I think Porsche has done a good job with theirs. Some purists will always shun an electric rack no matter how good it is.

I'm in the same boat in all regards. The HK in ours I would say is okay. Gets the job done. I wonder if there will be any way to retrofit the one in the M235 into ours. I will definitely be test driving one of them around May and will be interested in seeing how the sound system sounds in there.

As an audiophile myself, I was very bummed (at first) that my 1er didn't come with HK audio. But I'm noticing that I usually just turn the stereo down or off while driving. Gotta hear that lovely engine. The audio is a total non-issue now.

I prefer both loudly, simultaneously.

M235i is supposedly 3500~ lbs? That's nearly 200lbs more than the current 135i, that's kinda sad.

Not necessarily, the US info says 3505 lbs, the Cdn info says 3360.

I think realistically, 100-150 lbs is more attainable.

Remember, the M235i comes standard with iDrive and 10 way power adjusting seats, and standard automatic. The 135i you could get with non electric seats and no iDrive. Also has adaptive suspension, which I assume adds weight as well.

Not that it is an excuse, but I think a fully loaded 135i and M235i must weigh very similar, its just what BMW reports as STD for the USA.

Makes sense, thanks for explaining!

Now, if only BMW can confirm that they are going to build an M2, I would be so friggin' happy!

Interesting post quoting a BMW NA rep re the M235i on another forum. Just gives another perspective and interesting comparison to the M3. For what it's worth, though understandably biased.

Here is some feedback from BMW NA rep....

"Thanks for sharing that. I have actually experienced a lot of positive hype surrounding the M235i, both in person, and at Detroit.

Price wise, I find the M235i to be quick a nice value if you consider the price of a base 228i at $33k. For about $10k more, you get a car developed by M, M-Brakes, M Wheels, Pilot Super Sport Tires, M-Sport package, Dynamic Handling package, M-Tuned Exhaust, M-Performance Power Kit, M Developed pistons, tuned steering, and I believe Xenons.

M described the car to me as a street car built for the track, where as an M3 for example is a track car tuned for the street.

After living with the M235i for almost 3 months, I found it to be one of the most fun cars I have driven while being a perfect daily driver. My M3 can be a little much to drive every single day, but the M235i is very comfortable for this use, gets good MPG and can terrorize back roads when you want.

Let me know if you have any questions!"
