Lost the left front this morning
Now let's see what BMW Australia and my dealer have to say about it.

Could someone with a recent build (i.e. production date of 1/1/15 or later) check one of their center caps to see if BMW has gone back to the older version, more secure center caps with the round spring?

Just lost front passenger cap on a hot June day. Production Nov 2014 so this is still an issue.

Did this happen to anybody where the warranty didn't cover it?

They covered the first time but made a big issue out of a $30 center cap. Second time I didn't bother making an issue but the parts counter gave it to me for wholesale-about $16. That makes two. One for each side on the fronts.

I have experience a a design engineer who spent 8 years exclusively on wheel trim. The problem with BMW's design here is the lack of a wire retainer behind the retention legs. The fit may be fine on a cool wheel but brake heat transfers to the plastic legs inducing "plastic creep". The warmer and softer legs allow the cap to exit the wheel at the next convenient bump.
A small cap like these on a Ford or Toyota would have a wire and would be very difficult to remove without first removing the wheel and using the jack handle to knock it out from the back. |

Dealer replaced mine today under warranty, second time one has popped off. (Found it the first time, the wheel flexed when going up my driveway and popped it out)
They say this is not a common issue, but there are way too many posts on this subject for it not to be. Just know, those under warranty can get this taken care of. |

I have one pop off around 10k miles. My dealer replaced it but wouldn't cover it under warranty for some reason. They only charge me a like $5 so I didn't complain.

There are way too many instances of this on here, but I assume most people just order one online and call it a day. |

Strange...I've owned several BMWs since 2001, some with OEM wheels and some with aftermarket wheels, but always used the OEM center caps. Never had one "fall off" or otherwise go missing. Currently, 4K miles on brand new F23 228i and 20K miles on 2013 F30 335i, all caps accounted for.

Lost my drivers front a couple days ago. Dealer gave me a hard time about it but reluctantly covered it. My cap split in two, the outer half flew off and disappeared during my commute to work, the back half was stuck in the center of the wheel. Couldnt pull it out from the front. Wheel had to come off to pull it out from the rear. 17k miles.
