BMW M240i does battle with the Porsche 718 Cayman

BMW M240i does battle with the Porsche 718 Cayman

We've recently seen the shootout between the BMW M2 and 718 Cayman S, now its the M240i's turn to have at it with a 718 Cayman. This battle comes in the form of a straight forward drag race by AutoBild.

I guess 4-cylinder Porsches are still something to contend with...

The M240 got a jump off the line too. No contest IMO. When did drag racing become important to BMW enthusiasts anyways? I'll take the 718 any day.....

Assuming the base 718 Cayman (not the Cayman S) and a RWD M240i in the US with no options, $9,450. $53,900 vs. $44,450 according to http://www.porsche.com/usa/models/718/ and https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/2series/coupe.html. The Cayman is also 511 lbs lighter (assuming manual transmission in both and the RWD M240i) 2,988 lbs vs. 3,499 lbs.

I don't know why we keep trying to compare a 2-seat Porsche roadster to a 4-seat daily driver. They each have their place, but they are not really comparable vehicles.

Because bmw doesn't have anything good in two seats anymore. I guess they feel the brand doesn't need one anymore.

The video is a poorly edited clips added together doesn't look like they actually recorded those times from that run so A jump or not wouldn't matter.

While I agree who cares about a drag race I am looking at new cars and I'm in between An m3 and cayman S(yes I know polar opposites and the 2.5 liter cayman s is $67k base to have A 718 in A 2 series price range you'd have to get the 2.0 liter cayman that would be $9k more than A m240i base and not offer the performance they are testing here. Plus at the Porsche dealer I couldn't even find A Cayman for under $70k and that includes non S

718 S is great but it's price puts it in zo6 territory, I plan on driving one when I return to Florida maybe I'll be in love who knows

This being an cayman S , makes the base $21,800 difference $66,300-$44,500 and that's if you want a manual if not add another $3k which is free auto in the m240i

I drive an F82, I'd take a Cayman S over it any day. Much more involving, heart pounding drive.

You do realize that the roadster is the Boxster, right? Which wasn't part of this comparison.

I will agree with you on one front though - this comparison is stupid, for a couple of reasons - the Porsche is a sports car and the 240...isn't. And going around corners is what the Cayman is good at - so even down on power, it's still faster in a straight line than the 240.

I have no experience with Porsche but just drove 228i convertible for a couple days on California canyon roads. While 240 coupe is more capable, it absolutely cannot win from Porsche except for price. I wonder if BMW marketing department is behind these forums and the magazine comparisons like this one....

it's kind of nice to see them racing, but I don't know what the result tells us.
Neither of these cars are made to impress in the straight line. Also, Porsche is more focused on handling than the bmw is. I'm pretty sure it weighs a lot less than the bimmer and is a lot more agile in corners.

Like think about it, why would porsche drop the 2 back seats? Because they are stupid? No, because the car get lighter, shorter and more fun to drive.

The new z5 is coming out in the near future. Supposedly it's going to be a twin of the new Toyota Supra as well. BMW I think recognized that they never really did 2 sweaters right. That's why they are starting over from scratch.

Z5 will be the rial rival of the Boxter.
M240i is a sporty but also practical coupe. Nothing in common with the Cayman.

just like most BMW vs Porsche comparisons, if it's an add-on car, the Porsche would be better, if you need to use it every day and want flexibility, the BMW is the smarter choice. that's how I view them.
