218i Active Tourer Engine Replacement

I took our 218i AT to BMW yesterday for them to look at a list of issues I'd identified, most minor with one being of major concern. I started experiencing judder from what seemed to be the clutch when pulling away in 1st gear and it has been getting worse over the past few weeks. Due to the length of my issues list BMW said they'll need the car for a couple of days. This morning I receive a call from the service advisor who tells me that there was a Quality Enhancement requested for my car all to do with crankshaft bearings. But the damage has been done and the engine now needs to be replaced! So we are waiting for a courtesy car while they order the new engine and parts from Germany.

Ours is a 2014 218i Manual with a production date of 04/07/2014 so one of the first off the production line. I see on the Mini F56 forum a number of those cars (same engine and chassis) have had engines replaced too.

This was quite a shock to the system with the car only having 13000 miles on the clock.

There was a BMW TSB to replace the crankshaft bearings for this issue announced last November for the 3 cylinder 1.5 Turbo. Mine was done almost straight away at my insistence for safety reasons, though I didn't experience the symptoms you've had. There were issues with getting all the parts at the time, and 3 days turned into 2 weeks. No issues experienced since.

I would be asking why your service department didn't get in touch!

Definitely a question to ask but all a bit late now on their behalf as the damage to the engine has been done. What I worry about is damage to the rest of the drivetrain i.e. clutch and gearboxdue to the judder.

I've not seen any official information online from BMW as it should be handled through the dealer network. Here's the recall reference from HJ - https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbyca.../?section=good

BMW is only dealing with this when cars are brought in for service or repair according to the service advisor who dealt with me in the UK.

I noted a bit of vibration when I release the clutch pedal.
It does not happen always, but till now I didn't take care too much.
Your post worried me.
Would please explain better which kind of noise you experienced and in which drive condition?
I drive a 03/2015 manual transmission with 25k kilometers
Thanks!

This issue became very obvious when pulling away from a complete stop. It initially felt like a failing clutch but the judder got worse and worse. This was on our 218i manual with the B38 engine. Your warranty is probably nearly up so I'd get it to BMW ASAP and let them diagnose it.

I have a b38 with manual as well. I asked about the replacement the last time i was in the service. I was told that until the system (recall) tells them to replace anything on my particular car, they can do nothing.

I noticed the vibrations in 1st gear when pulling of from complete stop as well, but in my case it's the lever rather then the clutch. It gets worse on wet surface for some reason (wo/ wheelspin ofc). So I'm not sure that it does that because it's a 3 cylinder engine and it's not that balanced, or it's the crankshaft

The warranty expired two weeks ago
I checked better in the last days, and I can say that I feel a sort of vibration on the clutch pedal when it's fully pressed and I shift down for example from 3rd to 2nd gear.
It'n not a big vibration, I have this car from the beginning of March so I can't say if it's something new or if it's always the same.

My issue was quite well defined and only noticeable when releasing the clutch and pulling away. Once driving the car was fine. If you are pressing on the clutch - thereby disengaging gearbox and engine it is unlikely to be the same issue I faced.

Mine was a wobbly crankshaft as the bearing shells had worn prematurely.
