Build allocation questions

I struck a deal with my dealership about 3 weeks ago for an M235i build. They told me it would take about 60 days to receive the vehicle. No biggie, this seems normal and it's what I've experienced in the past. They told me they did not have an allocation available, but they would get one soon.

Fast forward to now, 3 weeks later, and I still have no idea when the car will be built. They have "ordered" the build, but BMW has not yet confirmed and/or provided a build date, etc.

So...

Does the dealership only get so many custom build allocations for each car per month? Per model year? For all models in total per month? Is it possible they won't have any build allocations for the near future, and they were simply hoping that our "deal" could help expedite a build slot from BMW?

I'm trying to determine the worst case scenario (longest wait time) so that I can manage my current vehicle situation until then.

I'd appreciate any insight on how the allocation process works.

Thanks!

I'm assuming you don't have a vin or production number yet since they had no allocation right?

Do you have a production number from the dealer? If not, go find a new dealer

If you do, i heard theres delay in production for what ever reason

Correct, I have nothing yet. They just sent me the build sheet that they submitted to BMW, which is essentially just a request without an allocation slot for it...

I think this is kind of the same boat I am in at the present. Order uploaded on the 19th and as of today nothing yet. It just shows that it is in the database. they tell me they have allocation for April and May. I need to call them....

when i ordered my bmw, there was already an allocation for it. Dealer gave me production number next business day (ordered on Sun). I still have to wait another 2 weeks after that before it went into production.

Each dealer will only get 2-3 allotcation per month to get 235.. sometimes less if BMW assign them some other car such as M3. It varies (from what fleet manager told me). My suggestion is if you don't want to wait that long, find a dealer that have an allocation for m235 already

PS. forgot to mention. sales technically didn't lie when they tell you it'll take 2 months. But they didn't tell you the whole truth either. It took my car exactly 2 months to get to dealer from when I ordered. BUT that's with exception of already having a production number.

60 days was a lie and they likely knew it was when they told you.

A dealer did the samething to me, at first they told me 6-8 weeks completion (car arrives to dlr) and this was after shaking hands and signing paperwork. I kept asking the CA for production # and he didnt have one for me (this was a week after paperwork) He kept making things up saying M cars takes longer blah blah blah. I told him if within another 2 weeks he cant give me an allocation/spot/prod # that I'll end the deal. So now I use this deal as a base line and went to another dealer for a better one and with an allocation for me.

Once i got another deal I cancel the other order...hey, he wasnt honest first so two can play this game right The CA gave me the prod# 3 days after and was honest about the entire process...also bmw just announce a $1000 option allowance on 2 series

I'll consider another dealer if I don't get confirmation soon. I've worked with this dealer for my last 3 vehicle, and I'm working through a friend that works for another brand at this dealership (i.e. he's not a BMW CA), so I'm inclined to stay with them...but I won't wait forever.

Yes, they only get X amounts of allocations / month / model...
For the M235 is either 1 or 2 / month depending on the size of the dealer...

If you didn't get a prod number is cause they just put you in the order bank but you didn't get an allocation assigned...

they only get allocations like 2-3 months in advance if they already sold their allocations then they need to wait to even see when the next on is... So now they might be able to see allocations till july or so

Also BMW might release more allocations at any given time so they might just be waiting to see if anything comes up....

They new exactly if they had an allocation for you or not...whether they shared that info with you or not is another thing... lot of dealers just do it to sign the deal and then you are stuck

this is how orders look like http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...6&postcount=57

ask them to show you your order in there ("menu") so you can see exactly what's going on

Dealers get a fixed number of "allocations" for each type of car, per month. So for example, your dealer might get three M235i allocations each month. With these allocations they either:

1) Assign them to a customer for a custom order.

2) Option the cars out based on what they feel they can sell, and put the car in to inventory.

The thing is, the dealer knows exactly how many cars they'll get, and exactly how many orders they have. So what I would do is ask the dealer straight up:

How many orders are in front of me?

Tell them you need to know so you can manage your car situation. Given that you're in a major market, there may be quite a waiting list.

Also, because the number of allocations is a known number, they can very easily tell you when your actual order is going to be placed. If they get 3 per month, and there are four orders ahead of you, you're 1 cycle away from a production number. If there are 6 ahead of you, you're 2 cycles. All of this assumes a 3 car allocation, which might be different, but they know the number either way. If they don't want to tell you, then you should assume the worst and go elsewhere.

The #1 thing to keep in mind is that if the dealer thinks they can take advantage of you, they will. That's what they have to do to stay in business. Don't take it personally, but keep it in mind.
