10 Things You Need to Know about the 2014 BMW M235i

Saw this from Road & Track today:

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-revi...?src=soc_fcbks

An excerpt:

"The badge says "M," yes, but the M235i is a replacement for the 135i, not the 1 Series M Coupe. Though it’s fast as all get-out (0–60 in 4.5 seconds in our testing), grips like the dickens (thanks to Michelin Pilot Super Sports), and stops like an M car (five feet shorter from 80 mph than a competition-package M5, for example), it’s not involving enough to wear an M badge. Much less 16 of them."

What surprised me the most was this:

"Speaking of silly, the M235i displays "M235i" on the LCD of its gauge cluster at all times. And it has horsepower and torque gauges in the center screen. But it has no way of telling you that the oil is so cold it has ice crystals in it. Or, on the other hand, that the engine oil is hot enough to fry a turkey. (Yeah, I’m going there again.) You have no way of knowing when launch control is going to work. Go to the racetrack, and half the time, the dash says "Launch Control Active," but the car performs a seven-second 0–60. Which we can only presume is because the engine is hot. But we’ll never know now, will we? I want to smack someone over this."

I was very surprised to learn that this car has no oil or coolant temperature displays. Is that right or did the reviewer(s) mess that up?

I apologize in advance if this has been posted already.

Haha! Seems about spot-on. The whole "M235i" confuses me anyway... Why not just keep the 235i nomenclature and keep the M-sport option pack the way it was. The seems like too blatant an attempt to cash in on the M moniker without actually being an M car.

16 M badges... LOL! Seriously, no oil temp guage? WTF?

The other day I was playing around on the BMW website. I built the M235i and was really impressed with the value.

But like I said in my OP, I am now shocked to learn that there is no way to gauge/measure either the oil or coolant temperature.

I sort of assumed that the fuel gauge on the left was digital? And would switch between fuel and oil... Maybe not

I guess a few people on here don't understand Caddy does a V and V Sport, Audi does an S and RS, on and on. What is so hard to understand they have introduced a step between regular BMW's and M's, 3,4, 5 and 6. Nobody is claiming its an M2 its a new level across all of BMW that has more hp than the stock BMW and some upgrades in suspension. Hello McFly.

Wow this guy's review is arrogant and annoying. I'm not saying that I don't agree with him, but it looks like a 10 year old with CAPS lock and ADD wrote it.

He's just bashing BMW left and right.. not even the M235i per say.

btw my 128i never had a engine temp gauge either and I never saw people complain in reviews.. although I would like an engine temp gauge

I also dislike the "S-Line" stuff from Audi as well. I wasn't aware of the V-sport line from Caddy but I feel the same way... It's poseur and lame...

Why would it? Only turbocharged models do, plus all M-cars.

I also think the author seems a bit puerile at times.

Anyway, an oil temperature gauge is something I would expect in any performance-oriented car. Especially one that features a turbocharged engine.

Even a standard C300 allows you to monitor the coolant temperature.

Can someone knowledgable about the M235i confirm whether one can check the temperature on two of the most vital fluids?

According to the M135i

It's a replacement for the 135is, not the 135i.

I knew there was no way something like that could be missed by BMW.

I also agree with others, he was seriously on a bashing of BMW and those that drive them.

I think the picture above is from the "hidden menu". The f30 has the same.

The car obviously monitors temperature though, as evidenced from the picture above. I've seen the engine hot warning come through idrive followed by a "drive moderately" warning when I was at the PDC. I have to assume this car has it as well.

I do agree though that I wish it had a gauge. If nothing else, it'll tell me when I could punch it.

There's already a load of posts on this in the F20 forum. Since the 1 and 2 are basically the same car, they share all these things. You could check there if you want more info.
So there's no oil temp gauge in the 1- 2 series. You can display it trough the hidden menu, but its a bit clumsy and also, I think you can't reset the normal display without restarting the car.
There are already vent-displays available for the F20, which can display the oil temp among other things. They are quite expensive though...

I knew BMW underestimated the 0-60 time on this car. They do it for marketing so the higher class vehicles don't look as bad and to show more improvement for the M2. But 4.5 sounds accurate since the 135is was at 4.6.

That's pretty solid for a car around $45k.

Imagine if only it had a DCT tranny...4.3??? Close to E92 M3 territory.

I'm surprised the author did not bash BMW on putting the ZF8 trans instead of the DCT.

The car sounds amazing! And 4.5 seconds to 60 is MENTAL! Better braking distance than an M5 ZCP? NUTS!

O.K., we get it.

Well, I think that this was inevitable--not everyone is going to love the car, and it isn't going to be as good as a 1M--that much is clear. The M2 will be the correct measuring stick for that.

This dude almost seemed like he was trying too hard to satirical, which had the opposite effect to me anyway. He just came off as trying too hard to be clever about his perceptions of the car's pitfalls--which there are obviously going to be some of those.

As someone else already pointed out, this car is aimed at the slot once held by the 135is--not the 1M. So you can't write a review based on an incorrect comparison, at least if you want to be taken seriously.

But all viewpoints are good ones until I get to drive the car. He talked about how shitty the steering feel was, but it was all related to feedback, not turn in or weight or sharpness. I find that encouraging. We shall see...
