Happens inn California with the vapor recovery systems. Turning sideways does the trick. Here's my epic hack that I use almost everywhere now:

Thanks. Love the hack!

I thought I'd tried turning the nozzle that far over, but I must not have gotten it quite right.

I figured someone had to have posted something about this long ago but was obviously using the wrong search criteria to find it.

I filled up yesterday for the first time, had no problems. But when and if it happens I'll know it's common...

Happened to me for the first time last night ! It shut off about 10-12 times during the entire fillup. There was only one thing different about yesterday night's fillup.

Unlike other times before, I let the tank get really low on fuel (15 mile range) and be that way for a few hours. That could have caused this, as someone else pointed out.

Annoying, isn't it?

I don't think the fuel level is the problem, at least not with me. The first time I filled up my tank was low; on reserve. The second time it was about 1/3 full, though, and it still happened as frequently.

I'm going to try the "gangsta" method this weekend. Hopefully that will work.

Never experienced this with my 228i and it's almost a year old. However, I had a 05' Audi A4 with the issue and it required an entire new fuel system. WTF...

I live in CA and I have 3200 miles on my car so about 15 fill ups. I've never had a problem with the pump shutting off. I read about this issue on the forums before I got my car and it was a concern, but so far so good. Maybe I just got lucky.

This is so strange--I guess in 15 fill-ups you haven't always gone to the same gas station and used the same pump, right?

I'm hoping to find a magic pump where it doesn't happen.

Stick nozzle in, twist counter-clockwise 20 or 30 degrees, begin pumping.

If I don't do that on my 2, pump shuts off.

Cheers

No issues here. Must have filled up at least a half dozen or so by now. It's the Kalifornia vapor recovery gizmo and from my experiences out on the left coast, I agree. I used the same technique to overcome an otherwise irritating inconvenience.

my 2013 328 had this problem when i first got it. turned out the fuel fill valve was broken and the dealership had it replaced. worked fine after that and i live in california with the vapor lock nozzles etc.

if it does it for your car all the time, the fuel fill valve is broken (which is why the nozzle will think your tank is full and click off)

Just a random thought, but maybe everyone having this problem should bring it up to their dealer. Even though it seems that a lot of people are having this issue, it may be a bigger issue and something that BMW needs to fix on a larger scale. Unless this happens across the board on many cars in CA, then I guess you're stuck.

Just confirming the "gangsta style" gas pumping worked. (I'm almost sorry this will be the last time I get to type "gangsta" -- I don't really get to use it much in everyday conversation).

As always, you've all been very helpful. Thanks much.

Interesting that this was brought up. I've had my car since june of 2014 and have had this issue numerous times but never really thought much of it. Some fills i'll go without a auto-stop while others it'll stop every 3-4 seconds. Recently i haven't had too many issues.. from what i can remember. Maybe i've just become too accustomed to dealing with the glitch .-.

9 months with my '14 M235i and I've only had it happen a couple of times. I pull the handle out for a few moments and then resume. This is consistent with other cars I've had.

I have no scientific data but I think it may be the amount of vapor in the tube to the tank which probably varies with temperature, humidity, and driving time. I usually open the tank first and then do the pump ritual which maybe give it time to clear.

All the "techniques" suggested (e.ge. "gangsta style") seem consistent with allowing the gas vapors and escape route.
