M Sport body kit - cooling, and what is the black rear bumper supposed to do?

Just wondering, how much more "cooling" does the M Sport bumper provide anyway? Can you measure it or is it just "seems to feel snappier(tm)?" sort of benchmarking? Less frequent limp-modes?

Also, why is the rear M-sport bumper black?

It looks better :P

Doubt the front vents make that much difference, I've heard the US spec ones have two openings as part of a 'hot weather' adaptation feature but I'm in Hong Kong (which gets very damn hot and humid in summer) and we get the grilles with only one side open. Pretty sure MSport for the US market is a purely aesthetic thing.

If you're referring to the diffusor, it's for rear downforce and aesthetics (mainly lol)

US version does have additional radiators on both sides so it is not really purely aesthetic.

The diffuser is completely aesthetic. It has about as much aero functionality as you taping ruler to the trunk lid.

Diffuser does nothing. Like said above...front bumper has additional radiators you can see them back there on the US version.

The back of the stock cars don't really have a diffuser. I think we just use that term for lack of better word. The optional M-Performance piece is a real diffuser and to my knowledge, BMW does wind tunnel testing, so it's a functional piece. It actually is designed to reduce drag, but few will notice the difference, I'm sure.

Wouldn't this be more heavily advertised to justify the price of the M Sport package? Do these additional radiators also come on the 228i M Sport?

TIA

The M Sport is only on 228s in the US. There is a lot about the M Sport package that's not advertised as well. The M Sport package has better brakes over the standard version as well. They're not the M brakes but they're larger than the standard I believe. Its weird to me how much is in the M Sport package that is not advertised.

And I doubt the M Performance diffuser is functional...I think for a difuser to be truly functional it has to have a whole sweet of aerodynamic goodies under the car to channel air. You can't just slap part of a bumper on and expect to create any meaningful down force.

Closest I can find would lead me to believe all 228i's have the auxiliary radiator.

I can't find anything to definitively say M Sport has more/better hardware to it, though I'd love to as I'm already leaning heavily towards it. If anyone has info it would be greatly appreciated.

Even that M-Performance piece is a bit of marketing magic. Rear valance diffusers only create meaningful downforce when they're paired up with a closed-off underbody tray with a car that's nearly slammed to the ground.

They can claim that there are aero impacts, but it's nothing to practical effect.

I have a 228 msport. Yes it has two additional radiators. 3 total can be seen from the front.

I'll definitely take a look at the next UDE, and see if I can compare the autocross M Sports to the street drive non M Sport.

Thanks!

Here a picture of my 2015 228i M-sport front that clearly shows two auxiliary radiators.

Thank you akuan99. Odd that realoem doesn't seem to list the part(s) nor BMW list the differences but it seems M Sport is more than just a cosmetic package and this makes me quite happy

I saw one 228i m-sport configuration without driver side auxiliary coolant here http://www.bmwofaustin.com/detail-20...-12684868.html
This one doesn't have track package so I'm not sure if it requres it to have both auxiliary radiators.

There's a detail I'd also love to have, does the THP add more cooling? Searches don't bring up definitive answers.

I have a 2014 m sport 228 WITHOUT the track package. It HAS the extra cooling. Perhaps they've left it off for 2015.

Great... keeping up with the changes year to year alone is a task. I would've thought they'd standardized something like this, additional hardware isn't a trivial detail.

Here is another 2015 228i M-sport pictures that appears to have track package but does not have driver side auxiliary radiator.
