JB4 and the OBDII cable

I'm wavering between the latest and greatest JB4 with the OBDII cable, the BMS Stage 1, and Dinan Sports Performance Tuner. I fully understand the ups/downs regarding power gains for each of these devices so no need to debate that here.

My question is about the JB4 and the OBDII cable. At this time, I have no intentions of adding additional performance mods beyond a tune nor running anything beyond Map 1 if I were to get the JB4. The word is the JB4 offers "smoother" performance hence the reason I'm more interested in it. Money isn't a factor here. My understanding is that the provided OBDII cable allows for datalogging, tune switching, CANFlap, etc. That's all great and well, but I'm not really interested in that functionality and wouldn't use it unless I thought there was a tuning issue or there was a very rare chance that I added more mods. I monitor parameters with my Torque app.

Per the BMS installation directions, it specifically notes that if you install the JB4 WITHOUT the OBDII capable, the JB4 will solely operate in Map 1 and obviously not have any of the special functionality. Based on the above, I'm completely fine with that. However, I've read at least one account where someone (not affiliated with BMS) said that you do have to run the OBDII cable regardless. Can anyone shed any light on this? because my understanding is that OBDII cable has no affect on Map 1 or even 2.

Given that I have a manual, I'm not really excited to try and snake the OBDII cable through the same hole as the clutch fluid line in the firewall and it sounds like a pain to remove if I don't want to leave a trace.

I'd get a Stage1 Flash tune that will outperform all the tricks you mentioned, yes they're piggyback they trick the car. As smooth as they can be there's still going to be a lag when compared to the smoothness and consistent delivery of a flash tune.

They're not that expensive anymore, I'm pretty sure you can get a stage1 tune for $1000 or less, may sound more than $300 or $380 or the $530 for JB4 but its also gaining you more 80-90whp 100-125wtq on bone stock car depending on your octane the M235 are seeing.

Are you leasing or buying?

I am also interested in OPs question. So far I asked it as well and got zero 100% answers.

I've wondered the same when I read that comment about not connecting the OBDII cable.

Why don't you ask the guys at BMS directly? They are really good about returning support question emails in a timely manner.

Yeah, I do plan on that and will report back with the answer from BMS. I was just curious if others have actually tried running the JB4 without the ODBII plugged in and what the result was.

I own it. A flash tune would be preferred but the only way I'd ever consider doing it is if we had the option to flash tune ourselves with a handheld unit like I had from Cobb for my 2012 WRX. I'm not a fan of sending in ECUs to tuners especially on a car like a BMW where it can get an odd, "No one's ever heard of that one!" electrical glitch if a bear farts in the woods. When I pop the hood on my M235 and I'm absolutely shocked by how many exposed wires there are. I'm use to seeing wires completely surrounded in wire jackets like is done on all Japanese makes. It's no wonder the German cars have weird electrical gremlins

If, like you said, money is not a factor then I would go with a full flash tune like Enzo or MP.

It's basically set it and forget it.

I think JB4 S2 is attractive for users that like tinkering with their car (e85 mixtures, meth, PI, turbo upgrades, etc).

I will run a flash at some point in conjunction with my current JB4.

You can run JB4 without OBD, it will operate as a stage 1 tune

JB4 will offer smoother power delivery but without the OBD connection it will be identical to a stage 1

Thanks. To clarify, do you mean it will have the characteristics of a BMS Stage 1 or JB4 Map 1?

That answer is still a little vague. Are you saying that without the OBDII connection that the power delivery of a JB4 on map 1 WOULD or WOULD NOT be as smooth as it would with it connected?

That seems to be root question here.

Thanks!

JB stage 1 and JB4 on map 1 both have smooth power delivery.
I personally do not think there is a difference on map 1 in terms of power delivery smoothness between the JB4 and the JB stage 1

JB4 without OBD is exactly like getting a JB stage 1
