FWIW, I'm a rather enthusiastic driver and yet I never had to top up the oil in my M235i. I changed the oil+filter on my own, at some 10k km on the clock, as BMW's "free 5-years maintenance plan" only provides oil replacement every 30k km / 2 years, whichever comes first. A couple of days ago I did another oil change of my own, and again - during the second 10k km interval - never had to top up at all. Am I just being lucky? Don't think so, as I had the same experience with all my previous and current cars (see my sig).
