B58 is a great engine - pulls hard and the 8AT is even smoother (8AT50HP) than the M235i 8AT (8AT45HP). Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong. I made the switch from 340 to M235i because I had the chance to jump on one with LSD. Otherwise, I would have stayed with 340i. If 240i + LSD is available then I don't want a M2 anymore :-)

Who cares, honestly, if you want a newer driveline go with the '17 and be happy with the added power/ cooling components. Don't think you're going to just drive onto a track and outperform everyone with a badge change/ motor update, though. Numbers on paper mean nothing in the real world, they just bump ego's and drive consumers to change what they have to something "better". The only thing better for me, is money in the bank and you can't do that by getting a brand new car every 3-4 years due to a marketing decision by BMW..

Long term ownership for me and my 2er. 10+ years before I will sell this car and move on to something "better". It will take more than a motor update, body facelift or interior update to get me out of this car. I'm that satisfied, I guess. I've been through this many times in the VW world, it's just not worth it to take hits anymore..

I'm sure many can justify the switch from 235->240 for their own reasons, I just don't see the value as a current owner of a 235 looking over the horizon. I'm not nearly as excited to see the 240 as I am to have the 235 paid off lol

Coming from a 2013 6MT 335i, I test drove a 6MT 340i before deciding on the M235i. The 340 didn't feel slower than the 335i, but it didn't really feel much quicker, either. I expected it to. It did feel a bit sharper, but I'm not sure how much of that was attributable to the 19" wheels (my 335 had 18s). The 8AT M235i easily felt much faster and more nimble than the 340i, but that was expected.

Even though I had to go with an auto this time due to increasing troubles with my left knee, my biggest takeaway from the test drive is that the auto rev matching manual made me sad.

Maintenance is only worth a few hundred to me and isn't enough to sway my decision on a $50K car. I've always consider it a gimmick to build consumer confidence instead of a real value.

It's mostly gimmick.....

Last time I got like 4-5 oil changes, 1 brake fluid change, and front brakes and rotors replaced for free. That's about $1200-1300 worth of work at the dealer. If you can get that done for free I think it could be worth it. edit: they might have replaced front and back, i forgot

Which depending on the car can be $1500-$2k of value.

oil pump and both timing chains are in the rear of the motor requiring a full pull out to get to those. No thanks

Water-pump and thermostat are my only concern as always.

The rear mounted timing chain, specifically the chain tensioner, are a concern. BMW's history with rear mounted timing chain systems is far from stellar.

The additional power of the B58 is a welcomed addition for sure, but we all know adding more power to the N55 is quite easy and cheap. BMS is still sorting through the tuning aspects of the B58 and is only recommending Map 1 for their B58 tunes on customer cars as there are still some hiccups and things to be learned about B58 and its new DME.

On my old e46 I didn't get my first brake pad replacement until > 50K. And never had to replace the rotor (sold at 180K+). I'm pretty easy on the brakes and prefer to coast.

i plan on tuning the m235i if i get one bwt
I agree, go with a proven engine and get it sooner.

Since timing chain is not a wear item I'm not overly concerned. The drive belts on the other hand do need periodic replacement and I would like to do that myself.

If you put them to good use they will wear ...

Basically you didn't make use of the money you pre-paid for brakes and rotors when you bought the car

They get used when needed. I've had to do some hard braking, but most of the time it's just coasting and light braking. I got pretty good gas mileage (29mpg+ for 2/3 hwy 1/3 local) even though I have a lead foot. Repeated cycle of hard acceleration and braking is what wastes gas.

It is when designed poorly. Many end up trading in cars if there is a chain issue since its too expensive to fix (usually only on German cars, with chain in rear design)

But again, could be an issue could be not, and even if its an issue, we are talking closer to 100k miles when it can fail

Whenever I have to pull the motor in a car I own, that means time to build it and make power. So if I HAD to pull the motor for some maintenance issue... then it just becomes and excuse to go crazy
