I'm running the OBDLink LX from Amazon for $50. Works flawlessly and doesn't flake out like a cheaper $25 OBD doggle I had earlier.

Try obdfusion. It comes in both iOS and android flavors. iOS uses wifi, while android uses bluetooth.

Pick up a P3 Vent Gauge. I've installed their gauges in my last four BMW's . It will tell Oil Temp, Coolant Temp, Intake Air Temp, Exhaust Gas Temp, Throttle, Speed, RPM with Shift-light, Battery voltage etc...

Later models of the P3Cars vent gauge also have oil temp. I have had one installed in my car since mid-2015.

The price has dropped on it considerably, too: only $230 new (or $330 pre-installed into an OEM vent assembly) on the P3Cars website.

It's hard for me to justify spending nearly $500 (current price on their website) for a P3 multi-gauge with trim work when I could spend $5 on the Torque app and $50 on a quality OBDII dongle and get the same exact information from my phone all the while showing all the parameters I want at once rather than being stuck watching one parameter at a time.

Flippin' the pancake over:

It's hard for me to justify mounting a smartphone in some ugly, thief-tempting, wire-tethered, potentially interior-ruining way when I can pop in a solution that is completely stealth and clean-looking (I'll include the Awron gauge in this as well) while keeping the smartphone out of sight and appropriately connected to iDrive in the center console ...

... particularly after years upon years of doing what you describe with both smartphones and GPS units in various cars. I'm way, way, WAY over that.

Torque/DashCommand/OBD Fusion are great, but I'm into integrating my bells and whistles, and so are many others -- otherwise, the P3Cars gauges wouldn't sell at all.

Also: the current price is $229, not "nearly $500".
actually, if you select OBDII multi-guage and pre-installed options, the price jumps to $489.

Indeed it does. Post corrected.

I'm still paying $389 for one.

VFRMikey, howzabout:

- Retrofit car with the BimmerTech MMI back up camera + SmartView HD Add-On

- Download DashCommand

- Mirror gauges from old iPhone, plugged in through USB in center armrest cubby, to iDrive screen.

- Pull hair out trying to configure iDrive to read music through USB, but DashCommand through WiFi.

- Cry over ~$850 spent

My OBDII uses BT; no wires. I simply have my phone in a cup cradle by the shifter and monitor boost, IAT, oil temp, coolant temp, and timing all at once. I then run and control Pandora through my non-nav IDRIVE screen via the car controls.

I guess I really don't see the point in monitoring the parameters all the time unless I were tracking the car. Now that I've had my setup for a while now, I already know how long it takes to warm up the oil depending on ambient temp and if the motor is cold/warm, typical boost values depending on gear and load, when timing gets pulled because of elevated IAT, etc. It's fun to watch the gauges, but I don't need to see it all the time. If I do want it, it's one click away on my phone. My OBDII dongle is always plugged in.

Once again, I fail at effective communication...

I actually haven't tried that, but I am planning on retrofitting the car with BimmerTech's MMI backup camera.

How sad would it be to have 3 generations of iPhones in the car all at once, all for a frikking Oil Temp gauge?

See, that's something I'm not comfortable doing. I know, the paranoia may be unfounded, but I prefer not to leave an opening to my car's private bits out there.

and Boost and 0-60, definitely will be getting one for my M240i. I had a P3 Cars vent gauge in my previous F30, and gave it to my son for use in his 2016 M3. They are pricey but, perfectly integrate into the car.

The LCI2 cars built after July 2017 have an oil temp gauge built into the instrument cluster. You just push the button on the end of the left hand stalk repeatedly to cycle through all the display options until it shows oil temp.

I have a 2014 m235i and I'm using a Veepeak bluetooth OBD2 adapter and I have ran Torque Pro and Dashcommand and it keeps saying in Torque Pro "no data" for the oil temperature and under Dashcommand it doesn't even have the capability to select engine oil temp as one of the gauges, its just no there. Any advice?

Installed the P3 last week. I bought the kit version to install into the vent and the whole process took about 40 minutes, being careful, and it works excellent. I leave it displaying oil temp so that I don’t stress the ol’ 4-banger too early out the gate.

Nice finally having coolant temp again as well. — Expensive, yes, but I have more peace of mind now, especially with this somewhat delicate N20 motor. Highly recommend
