With the great success of the film, the magical role “Godfather” won high popularity in people. Ever since, the simple religious word is used to refer to the leading figure in various fields.

BMW also has such a leading figure, which is the BMW M established in the beginning of 1970.

As the sporting godfather of BMW, early M products have no M logo. The first work was famous BMW 3.0 CSL,with impressively huge spoiler at the rear, which earned itself the name of “Batmobile”.

By virtue of excellent performance, BMW 3.0 CSL won numerous champions in world car contests. Esp. since 1975, BMW 3.0 CSL has taken the crown 5 times in European Touring Car Championship consecutively, truly deserving the title of champion reaper. Besides, the first BMW Art Car was also built on the basis of BMW 3.0 CSL in 1975.

In 1973, BMW M launched another fine work—2002 Turbo. It’s worth noting here that this famous hot hatch was the first limited edition model driven by turbocharged engine across Europe.

After a few adjustments by M Department, 2002 Turbo earned much more sportiness. The turbo charged quadruple cylinder engine in the 2002 Turbo delivered 170 horsepower. This in turn allowed the 2002 Turbo to sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds. You know what? 40 years ago, that’s the unique performance of supercars!

No wonder that 2002 Turbo dare to print its name strikingly backwards down its front face. Like what’s on an ambulance, “Hey! Get out of the way!”

In this era, the sports passion of BMW reached an unprecedented height.

In 1975, a family with sporting spirit was born-BMW 3 Series. Till now, the ever growing and developing BMW 3 Series has passed through 40 years.

The first BMW M model with M logo is BMW M1 launched in 1978. This MR two-seater super car was specially designed for the track. With a max speed of 260km/h,M1 was highly admired by all BMW enthusiasts around the world. Now, BMW M1 has become a precious collection of treasures.

Similarly, the motorrad of that era share equal splendor.

In Jul. 25th, 1973, the 50th Anniversary of BMW motorrad, the 500000th BMW motorrad drove off the production line. And both the BMW R 90/S and R 90/G produced then boasted a 5 Speed Gearbox and an engine displacement of 900 cc.

As the first motorcycle with front fairing in the world, driven by creative Front Drum Dual Disc Brake, R 90/S enjoyed stronger speed performance.

In 1980, the great family of BMW motorrad—the GS Series was born. The first mysterious work with both letter G and S—R 80 G/S displayed BMW motorrad’s full control of traffic conditions.

Other than speed, stability was also what BMW motorrad has been pursuing.

In 1988, BMW became the first vehicle manufacturer who used antilock brake system in motorrad design-BMW K 100. Within just one year after the launch of BMW K 100, nearly 60% clients chose it for its excellent safety performance.

As the old adage goes in China, self-introspection should be practiced on a daily basis.

Absorbing oriental philosophy, the first BMW 7 series models had strong self-checking function. It would warn the driver for car maintenance and oil renewing. Besides, when a fault occurs, the air bag would alarm itself to alert the driver. In 1988, BMW started to upgrade the self-checking function in the car. The self-checking system would monitor the main functions of the car and record the faults so that maintainers could easily spot the faults.

At that time, BMW also established the technical department as its think tank, which goes beyond the limit of conventional production. Here, top vehicle designers and engineers gathered to provide creative ideas for BMW vehicle design. The first achievement of BMW IT department was BMW Z1 roadster, which was put into production in small scale from 1988.

Each BMW Z1 is supported by an integrated heelplate frame. The 2.5 liter engine produced 171 horsepower, enabling it to run 230 per hour without an effort. Most notably, the door of Z1 can be hidden inside the body, which absolutely can be called the “french window” of BMW!

Neat review, thanks for sharing it. Seeing the Calder art car as a child cemented my early love for the marque.

As a historical comparison to the '73 2002 turbo, the '73 Vette managed 250hp from a 5.7 liter (hi po 350) or 275 from a 7.4l (454); reported times vary, but the page I pulled up listed 0-60mph at 7.2, and 1/4mi at 14.7 or 15.5. Not sure the 2002 was ever exactly a supercar, but it was a revolutionary performance milestone.

And I really love the fact that they wouldn't let them put the reverse 'turbo' lettering on them because it was considered too "aggressive" for the autobahn (more impudent than aggressive, really). Apparently it was put there to counteract the tendency of a-bahn drivers to only pull over for a faster (more expensive) car - so they could see it was a turbo. I guess this upset the royal hierarchy (and a bunch of uptight rich Germans) by spanking so many euro sedans of the day, and out of spite they made it go away. I've been thinking of adding that logo to my 228, more out of nostalgia than aggression (now that everything on the road comes w/ a turbo).
