Next Generation RWD 2 series?
Will there be a RWD successor for the F22 2 series or will it be merged with the 1 series after this generation? The model pipeline thread didn't have anything listed ( http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=901686 ).

Most news I read is fwd, sad but bmw does not sell a lot of 2 series, I would think they would want a cheaper platform to add more.tech to, keeping up w other brands.

The product plans I know of indicate a rear wheel drive replacement for the current coupe/convertible, and addition of a rwd Gran Coupe. The GC appears to be added to the current generation around 2019 +/-, but then is also included in the next-gen renewal. Nomenclature can cloud this issue as the current 2 Series Active Tourer and upcoming X2 are on the front/all-wheel drive UKL platform shared with Mini. We also have to clarify the distinct 1 Series sedan, fwd on UKL, sold only in China, which some thought would show up here as the 2 Series sedan, but that doesn't seem to be the plan.

I really hope a 2 series gran coupe comes out in 2019. I like the 4 series gran coupe liftgate, but the vehicle is too big.

The link posted referred to an LCI in near future for (2) series incl M2 2018 F22/F23/F87 2er/M2 LCI - July 2017 - 230i - M240i - M2 Additionally the F22 isnt scheduled to go EOP until 10/2020 Thats a LOOONG way away.....not surprised there's nothing published regarding what comes next. Monthly sales of 2's are on par with other models so there's no incentive to eliminate it http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1349556 Not sure where you're getting the notion of a FWD 2 series but van Meer also recently said hell no to a FWD M car http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1347963 Given the amount of commonality between M2 and the rest of the 2 series, the only way I see the 2 series "Go Away" is if the M2 similarly is discontinued. But the end of 2020 is a long way away...... |

Very reassuring. Was hoping this was some kind of misunderstanding; keep forgetting that they also call their econo-hatch a 2 series. Can't begin to say enough about how frustrating and confusing the naming has become - I think worse b/c it has the illusion of being orderly and containing useful info.

I agree - hot hatch is an area that seems like a natural. A see it as more of a competitor for the Golf than the Mini. Mini's is one of those cars that seems to have its own niche, like Jeep, not really directly compared to other cars, and if you are really into a Mini you probably don't want most other types of hatch (at least that fits any Mini Owners I've known - like they cross shop the other weird stuff like Prius, T'bird, and those odd Chrysler pseudo-retro cars).
And call it something different, not just 'the FWD 2 series'. |

The UKL platform is fwd, AWD based, used for many products since bmw could use this platform (prob ver 3 by 2020) it would cut development costs quite a bit. It would also allow for a larger ranges of crossovers in the usa which is needed. 1 series in china is already based on ukl. Right now 2r and 1r and closely related to 3 series, I would think moving to the larger(volume)/cheaper ukl platform would be best suited. Most industry supply chain news share similar sentiment. While everyone on this fourm, myself included would love to see rwd, BMW looks at numbers, and sales numbers are not great. I would think they would do whatever is needed to up sales across the brand. In this world it tech, driving dynamics are very low on the avg. buyers list. Most prob. could not tell the difference between fwd and rwd when driving. They can tell when they do not have the latest apple play and a backup camera is $500. I can use my dad as an example, I took him to drive the 3 series last fall, drove a 6 cyl and a m package. He liked the cars, and then we went to Lexus, drove the es and the gs. He ended up leasing a gs for less than the m sport, and he felt it was worlds ahead of the 3 series. I thought it drove like an appliance, but he could care less. I would argue most car buyers are like him, and even more like my wife who got a crossover, she chose a lexus nx over the x1, again not my choice, but felt it was worlds ahead in build quality and looks. The add ons on lexus f sport were $2500, same tech on the 3 series m sport was additonal 9k! So here we have 2 people, who I was flipping the bill for and I could not get them in bmw, and to be honest the lexus in both instances was a much better deal. I doubt the m2 numbers will be enough to float the car. and they did say awd m cars were coming. BMW would put an m badge on a bicycle if they could. |

Unless BMW is going to eliminate those models I dont see why they would not continue with a 2 Series van Meer has already said that there will not be a FWD M As I understand it the M varients are based off their standard production brethren not the other way around. Not sure I understand why you keep going back to references to UKL platform speculation when the current 2 series isnt slated to go end of production until the end of 2020. I expect that when the end of 2019 rolls around we'll have a better idea what the future will hold for the 2 series Until then its pure vaporware speculation right? |

Wow, that's surprising! The M3 is much too big & wallowy for me even with the suspension in the stiffest setting at all times. I need something with a back seat for my two young boys and I've narrowed it down to the M2 (with aftermarket suspension) & a base 991.2. I definitely enjoy driving the 911 more than my M3 but am still doing research on how much the M2 can be improved with aftermarket suspension.

991 was a case of meeting your heroes. Was in the shop all the time, not just mine, I know 5 owners from base to gt3 and everything in between. All had issues. I ended up with a heavy modded 235 and a f type. Much happier. If I could just have one I would take the 235. In your case you can skip and get m2. Is the interior as nice, no, but the driving dynamics and general fun of the car is much better. 991.2 may be better with turbo, base na car with 350 hp was nothing when your riding on 300 width rear tires. You had to ring it out for the power, so you looked like an ass. Really quite boring around town and lots of rattles developed. Mine was a lease, and a very good deal, prob would have lost 35-40k easy over 2 years if purchased. |

If 1 series switches to fwd ukl I don't see 2r on a 3 series derivative, Another option would be to just have it around for a while like z4. Yes all speculation on 2r, most info on 1r is fwd ukl. I would love to be wrong, if not will buy an m2 in last MY. http://www.motor1.com/news/135266/20...series-render/ |

I read RWD.....I read and see in the video 4 doors.
F44 to be released in 2019 with new model scheduled for 2021 http://www.bmwblog.com/2016/07/18/bm...rrive-in-2019/ spy video: http://www.bmwblog.com/2016/06/30/bm...upe-spy-video/ I'll be trading in or selling my bare bones 2016 228i 6MT for the new 4 door. 2 doors is the ONLY drawback to me with the 228i coupe.....I have six grand kids that I help tote around |

4 doors will make entry/exit easier, but that's still 2 in the trunk if you're driving! Roof rack? Minivan?
