Agreed. I hope lightest weight and balance are the #1 priority. A 4-cylinder version of the S55 would be my choice.

Well that's really... um... Amazing! ..... since that's what happened with the E30 M3 vs the E30 325is back in the mid 1980s......

Any chance of the upgraded N55 turning into an S55?

I really would want the E90 M3 style normally aspirated V8 and the car weighing less than 2900 lbs.

I would settle for the F80 M3s motor in a 3300 lb M2.

I'd want a detuned S55. I expect a revised N55.

Recaro racing seats instead of the luxury electrics would be good for nearly 100 lbs. Take out some of the bloated luxury items and 3200 lbs should be easy to obtain. If they decided to do the turbo 4 cylinder they could even get under 3000 lbs.

Anyone drove or has seen the latest Mini GP reviews? I know it's a totally different car but make it a 300+ hp engine 4 cylinder and rear wheel drive with 1250 kg weight and you end up with a car that deserves to be worshiped . M235i in my opinion is not as fun and rewarding to drive as the GP, mostly because of its weight.

I'm confident that the M2 is coming with a 6 cylinder and likely the N55 but I'm seeing numerous references to the S55 being tuned for it also. Either way, I'm in. I already have a deposit for the first available build slot with my dealer in case it turns out to be a limited production run.

those magazines talking about the S55 are clueless. the member ynguldyn put up the actual engine in testing according to BMW documents and it is indeed an N55. I don't think his post is really a rumour but more of a factual account of what is registered for company testing so we can definitely go with it!

I am thinking about putting a deposit down in the next month or two as well.....but only if this is released as a 2016. If it comes out as a 2017 it would suck!

I agree, with the distinct possibility of VW putting the Golf R400 into production with a 395hp 2.0L 4 cyl, I think BMW will feel the need to prove they can do a 'four' that is better than their rivals.

the ONLY reason Audi/VW are putting together these high powered 4s are because Audi poached the Mercedes engine designer/engineer last year.....yeah the same guy who made the CLA45 AMG engine. It's not a competition at this point...but basically the same guy who headed the CLA45 engine design is now doing it for Audi/VW!

it's kind of a shame because i prefer Audi's 5 pots.

So do I, historically, traditional Audi = 5 cyl in the same way that traditional BMW = inline 6 cyl.

However, I thought the 4 cyl AMG engine design came out of Merc's 4 cyl F1 engine that was then scrapped when they revised the new engine rules in favour of V6's.......???

Actually as far as i know---the AMG 4-cylinder is just a very heavily boosted version of the standard MB 4-cylinder which is 1.6L and 2.0L in the rest of their CLA lineup and B-Class cars. The amount of boost it has is very high though....higher than i've seen in other 4-cylinder turbos.

Oh wait, that's right, the guy who knew how to make normally aspirated motors left BMW for Stuttgart. Another budget turbocharged brick it is, then...

Mezger. Come back after your lump has won Le Mans 14 times and we can discuss.
This would be great. Also, it is doubtful OP's NA 3.6 inline 6 would even fit into an M2 or even M3/4 for that matter.

I don't care if its 4, 6, or 10 cylinders as long as it's about 200 lbs lighter than M4, has at least 360 HP, and revs to 8500. But I know that probably won't happen.

Multiport injection would be a huge plus as well but I'm guessing they wouldn't bother with the R&D for that. Lazy ass cheapskate sons a bitches.

I don't think that really means anything.

E30 325i was a 6-cyl but the E30 M3 was a 4-cyl..

I would like to see a good blend of lightweight but solid power in the M2. They can totally redeem the value of M to BMW folks if they get this right.
