I hate Sirius XM

I like to listen to Sirius XM. I listen to it every day on my short drive to and from the coffee shop or wherever I'm going.

My one year free sub is about to run out. I know that if I'd let it lapse, the ******** would give me a better deal, but I just can't be bothered. But it ticks me off to know I could have a better deal. ********!

If CarPlay worked better I'd cancel Sirius XM altogether.

Are the play lists for a given channel still so short that you can feel like you're listening to a song you just heard?

I think they might be better but still pretty short. Favorites turn up at least every day it seems.

At one point, I had two lifetime subscriptions on a couple of cars, and over the years, it amortized out to about four bucks a month. Those weren't transferable (except once when my wife totaled her car). Lifetime subs are not available anymore, but for a few different genres of jazz, classic vinyl and the like, and being able to keep listening to Morning Joe when running out of the house to the office in the morning, I don't mind the ~40 cents per day.

I have 3 cars with XM and I don't think I pay over $30 a month. I mainly listen to MLB and News in my 45 minutes commute when I take my car instead of my truck ...

but I get Military discount which makes a difference

A good podcast app, and off-lining a bunch of your spotify/apple music, etc playlists goes a long way. I wish the dealership never included XM trial so I don't get all the junk mail.

XM is ok if you travel very long distance and are out of cell coverage, or you got a cheap deal. Downsides being the sound quality is terrible. With unlimited cell plans and so many good podcast apps, phones with so much capacity there's not much incentive for me to use it.

Having said all that Sirius XM stock is doing just fine so what do I know.

Your comment caused me to take a look, and here's what I found at The Motley Fool:

"Sirius XM has never been as popular as it is right now. There were a record 33.5 million subscribers on Sirius XM by the end of June, 483,000 more than it had just three months earlier. There was a time when bears were willing to bet that connected cars, cheap streaming apps, podcasts, and even pirated streams would supplant satellite radio. They were wrong.

Sirius XM is growing with every passing quarter, and listeners are sticking around. Monthly churn clocked in at 1.6% during the second quarter, a historical low. Sirius XM's bottom line is growing even faster given its scalable model, as its 49% burst on the bottom line towers over the modest 6% uptick in revenue.

Sirius XM stock has moved higher every year since plummeting in 2008. Sirius XM has been one of the market's biggest winners over the past decade... The stock is up 31% so far this year, once again trouncing the market."

Not too shabby for a stock that was roadkill and trading for a dime back in 2009.

Oh, military discount. I didn't know that. I'm a vet so I will be giving them a call for a discount on my 2 cars. Thanks.

Snaketh: I've always thought the sound quality was terrible. Piano is distorted. Bill Evans sounds like Thelonious Monk on Sirius.

I think I listened to mine 2 times during the 1 year free deal. I listen to my thumb drives or my phone if I want to listen to TuneIn radio.

Sirius was a novelty when it first came out. I liked it but later found that the programing they offered (l routinely listened to 3-4 stations and had to tolerate the commercials too) was pretty mundane. For what they charge I couldn't see the value for what little I listened to.

If you like it, threaten to not renew and you'll get transferred a few times until you'll wind up at someone who will offer you 6 months for $25 or something similar.

I would not give them you CC# or they will start charging for renewals at full price automatically. Ask for a bill instead.

I don't spend enough time in either of my cars to make paying for this service worthwhile - I'd rather spend it on Netflix and on-demand movie services. My problem with it is that you can set your watch by which song is playing on a given channel - same time every day, never seems to change. I don't commute to work and most of my driving is short trips, but when I make longer trips, I have local HD radio stations plus my 500-song music library. They are persistent, though...their solicitation mail comes through like clockwork every month, as though I'm suddenly going to change my mind.

Not only do I listen every day in my car but on my phone when I run 4-5 days a week. Phlash Phelps on 60’s, generational thing but I’ve had XM since in came on the air before it was on the BMW radios.

The music bandwidth is definitely low fidelity (about the same as old AM radio), in addition to the short playlist on each channel. It's OK for voice.

X2 for Phlash Phelps 60s on 6. XM on the whole is worth the price.

Further to hating them: I renewed. The renewal, of course, goes into effect when the free trial runs out. That's 10/1. Meanwhile, every time I start the car and occasionally otherwise, it is going to take me to the renewal page that tells me I have to renew. Idiots.

P.S. Their email page doesn't actually let you submit the email. It just hangs ...

Do either of those offer the audio portion of cable news channels?
Do they require any data from a cell phone?

I don't know much about them, but need the first and can't allow the second on my (only) company-supplied phone.
