I can not confirm it is cancelled on present generation F2X platform, but I would not keep hopes high. BMW is working on X7, X1, probably X2, 7 Seater 2 Series Active Tourer and on several Mini models as well as on new 7 and 5 Series.

The 2 Series has only has entered the market, the 2 Series Cabrio is not yet out, I highly doubt the GranCoupe will come.

Point is, that all next 1 Series (3 and 5 door hatch) could be named 2 Series names (including the coming X2), in order to give place to the sub 1 Series car that will rival the A1 as a BMW "badged" Mini, so as a sub X1 SAV to rival the long ago mentioned yet not existing Audi Q1. So expect to see a next generation FWD based 2 Series, with at least 7 versions, 3 door hatch, 5 door hatch, Active Tourer, Active Tourer LWB, Coupé, Cabrio, GranCoupé (sedan) and possibly GranShooting (wagon like Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake).

I could be mistaken, but BMW now has 3,5,7 designation for sedans, and 2,4,6,i8 for coupes. Could it be the next 1 series will be a 4 door version of the 2?

That's the impression that I've been getting.

That's how BMW originally justified making the 4 series. The 3 series would be the 4 door and the 4 series would be a 2 door and the rest would follow suit. Like you said .odds are sedans, evens coupes. But with all these "Gran Coupes" I guess it gets a little muddy

I guess if you have a life beyond driving for the fun of it and need four doors on your car, then if you're even considering BMW, you will buy the 3. I guess it's smart business, but based on renders I've seen, the 2 series GC would look so hot, I would get it over a coupe, even without really needing the two extra doors.

Edit: Not saying the 2 can't be a great daily driver. It will be my daily driver. But I have no real need for four doors or extra rear leg room.

I'm with you. Those 2GC renders were amazing. I sat in an Audi A3 sedan this past weekend at the AJC auto show and it reminded me so much of my old E46 330 (from a size standpoint). I would love, love, love an M235i GC (or M135i sedan or whatever it would be called)
