M235i A/C Question

Noticed that when I turn the A/C on higher settings, the car will have a vibration when idling at a Stop Light.

Is this normal?

Also another thing I noticed is that when I have the fan at Max, it seems like the passenger side fan doesn't kick in until car has been running for about 5 minutes. I'll be driving around and all of a sudden I can hear passenger side fan kick in.

Car is 3 months old about 5k miles on it

Not sure if this is normal or not.

Thanks,
K

The AC compressor runs off the accessory belt so when the car is demanding it to run at the highest load possible (especially on extremely hot days in the middle of summer) it can cause the engine idle to drop more and vibrate a bit. This is normal, and almost every car will do this in similar conditions (I see you're in Texas, so I'm guessing its pretty hot).

For the fan kicking in, are you using auto or manual mode? Auto usually waits until the AC compressor actually begins cooling off the air before blasting you with a steamy blast of air, but it shouldn't take 5 minutes. I'm not sure if that's just a result of extreme heat or not.

If you are in auto mode, try manually changing the passenger vent setting and see if it turns it on - that will tell you if it's just the computer intervening.

The high today in Houston is 100 degrees, On Tuesday it will be 99 with thunder storms. The high in San Diego will be 74 degrees, the solution to your problem is clear.

What's the easiest job in the world? Weatherman in San Diego!

I just bought a '95 Land Rover Discovery that lived in San Diego it's entire life - silly thing is SHINY underneath. And on top, and inside.

For the OP - sounds pretty normal to me, and my M235i does the same stuff when it is 95F+ out.

Being from LA and having gone though our massive heat wave last month when the temps hit 117 the behavior you are describing is completely normal. BTW I'm impressed with how ice cold the AC is in this car.

Any way to "SYNC" the driver/passenger temps? Can't find anything in the manual.

I don't think it exists. Is that really an issue?

AFAIK, there is no sync for driver/passenger (according to my dealer and the manual).

It's on my wife's MDX. I've probably used it once. But that's just me.

I've been noticing this on very hot days. There's almost a "rolling" sensation to the vibration. Is that what you're experiencing?

AC in my M235 is no where near as effective or powerful as the one in my wife's X4

Only a year difference in vehicle age too....

Yes something to that effect.

Like a long vibration followed by 2 short ones. then pause and then it happens again. Something along those lines

Sounds just like mine. I've also noticed it on hot days at stop lights. Usually shortly after I start the car. Normal I guess?
