I'm about to give up on getting a BMW. Opinions?

Hey guys

I need a car by mid next month and I basically have 2 options:
  • Get a Golf R (in stock, new)
  • Get an M235i (factory order)

Getting the M235i will be kinda tricky. My budget is very limited (I want to pay 45k out of the door incl 10% taxes). It is possible to work out on that by limiting the options, so it would have to be a factory order (the only cars available in stock are fully loaded at 50k+taxes).

Being a factory order will be tricky for me, because I will need to rent a car for those 10 weeks. I estimated taht the minimum I'll end up paying for the rental is like 1600 for the period...

Maybe I should just settle and get the Golf R. What you guys think?
I thought about getting a used M235i, but the clowns in town are asking more than MSRP of a new. I thougth about getting a used car and shipping it to here, but it's too much work for now.

Never settle. You can get a 235 in that range. Especially now that new 240s are coming

Where are you located? So cal would be pretty easy to get that I would think. I had an exact build in mind and found there are actually 2 that were near by.

I'm in Washington ST.
I think LA is a lot better to get BMWs.

Have you had a local dealer look up stock at other dealers to see if they have your build? I lucked out and found my build at South Bay BMW in southern California and I had it shipped to Idaho.

that would not be a bad idea! How much did they charge you to have it shipped to there?

See if you can come to a deal with the shipping factored in. A lot of times they will just do a trade for a future allocation and shipping halfway across the country is often only $500-800, half the price of your planned rental.

I was already getting $2K under invoice for the car so I didn't bother pushing to have shipping included. Shipping was $950. I'm sure other places, perhaps more populated areas, would have a lower rate. In my mind I paid $950 to not wait months for a factory order, only about a week.

I tried to get a model that is in stock and the dealer said:

"The price is: 53,898 after tax"

We went back and forth on a few emails, mentioning that the 2017 model is coming yada yada.

He went back to me with: "In that case, the price is: 53,898"

Like... dude? Perhaps I'll have to go with the other german. Lol

I'm ok about getting a naked M235i as long as it's manual. But the only cars available locally are fully loaded with MSRP of 50k+
Even elsewhere I can't find a manual for 45k MSRP

Did you try using Truecar and/or a car buying service through your bank? I'd find another salesman at least. I had the same issue, the first dealer I talked to didn't want to play ball on the price, so I went with USAA's car buying service, and the closest certified dealer was in another state but was fine with the online quoted price, which was a great deal.

yes, I did contact a local dealer with Truecar. I haven't tried bank purchasing service (what is this?)
I think the more attractive prices are in other states and that is for factory order. I would have to eat the additional cost to ship the car to here. I did contact a few truecar certified dealers and got fair prices in NY and LA.

So far, Steve Thomas gave me a pretty good pricing (plus they ship the car to here), but it's a factory order.
The only tricky part is the timing. I need the car like in 4 weeks max, so that is why I was contacting the local dealer with in-stock 6 speed.

I custom ordered a sport wagon order to delivery 4 weeks. It can be done if you find a dealer with a car just about to go into production.

if it was me i'd order the M235i that you really want rather than settling for something else. It's something that you're going to be using everyday for years.

In the meantime how about buying something weird and old and cool for a couple of grand? Drive it for a couple of months while your BMW is being built and then you can sell it for virtually what you paid for it.

Another alternative is a car rental. Generally, you can rent a car for about $500 per month while you wait. Not the best deal in the world to drive around in a toyota yaris, but could help in a pinch. Also check with your dealer, sometimes they are willing to give you access to a car while you wait, at a lower rate.

We'll see... there is the wife factor as well. We'll see if she agrees.

Go to a different dealer and get priced out there as well. Also dont be afraid to ask for a new CA. I told the sales manager at the dealer I got my car from that I did not want to work with my current CA anymore because she was rude and didnt know anything. Ended up getting a senior associate to work with and he cut me a great deal and knew his shit.

You're not going to find any new M235i less than $45k in Seattle (if that's where you live). Have you driven the BMW and the VW? I wouldn't call a Golf R settling unless you're just not into it. It has a different purpose that fits some people better. I almost went that route but couldn't get over the 4 cyl and they were as available as unicorn turds when I was buying. The APR tune is a real whopper though.

I had also considered the Golf R, but decided against it for a few reasons. 4 cylinder, bland styling that made it hard to distinguish to the untrained eye, color choices and AWD.

the Golf 400r rumor has interested me, but the reliability issue always seeps in. I feared the same with BMW and why i leased, but 2 series was named most reliable sports car
