So I've been lurking around Autotrader and Cars.com for the better part of 6 months as my unicycle has 144,000 miles on it and a suspension that pops and snaps over every bump.

And now with the MY2017 vehicles lurking just around the corner, I'm a bit stuck.

I found a good deal on a MY2014 M235i; tech, premium, cold, driver assist, harman with 18k miles for <$38,000.

With ~15k down comes out to $520/month or so.

Every time I get close to pulling the trigger a little voice on my shoulder says that I can lease a new one for about the same. And then it says 2017 will be here in a couple of months.

Normally peoples' responses to this boil down to "YOLO!!!" but in this case, with JOB1 date 2 months away, would you guys take the used 2014 CPO or hold off and lease a new 2017?

MY17 has a substantially worse maintenance policy. You could lease the 2014 CPO for 10k miles/year and still fly under the maintenance/warranty of 4yrs/50k. I believe there's also an extended 2 years/50k after that for CPOs. This would include brakes (rotors+pads), oil, wipers and a bunch of other things. MY17 covers oil change and a bunch of useless fluid checking.

If it helps, I leased my 2015 M235i exec demo in December 2015 w/ 7400 miles for $2.15k down, $549/month for 15k mileage lease. It's got tech, premium, driver assist, cold weather and alarm. Residual for 15k was at 56% at the time I think.

I would definitely buy the used car if it checks out and the price is right. Don't forget that you're paying equity into a used purchase (while still depreciating) while the lease is depreciation only. You would be saving a lot of depreciation lost. In 3 years just a guess the used car will lose $10k. The new car will lose closer to $20k. So is a new car worth about $275/mo more to you? I suppose for some that's worth it but CPO takes a lot of risk away.

My normal recommendation would be the newer model. However, a couple things about a CPO, especially a 2014. I was one of the last ones of the 2014s to have a transferable maintenance good for 4 years. As others have said, you also get to tack on 2 more years of warranty. While the 2017 has some engine tweaks to squeeze a little more performance, you won't miss it in any 2014-2016 model. My only comment is that you can do better than that price. You should be able to easily negotiate the number close to 30k. You figure the car was probably 50k when new, and the lessor paid more than 20k in lease rates for three years, and the dealer probably paid around 27k. In other words, they have a LOT more wiggle room, than they will let on.

Can barely get a loaded 228i for that price.

I'm still looking; I get cold feet every time I find one.

$38k seems really high, my car has 30k on it but invoice is under $30k. You should be able to get a smoking deal on a 2016 leftover in a few months.
