M235i Negotiating
Hey guys! I'm thinking about buying a new m235i.
What I haven't decided on yet is if I should do European Delivery, Custom Order it, or get one of the lot at a dealership. I am fortunate to have 4 BMW dealerships near me. I want a M235i in either AW or Metallic Black with sensatec leatherette, tech package, and drivers assist package. I need help with negotiation tactics and advice on whether to buy or lease. I am a 18 year old looking to put anywhere from $2500-10k down. Thanks! |

There are some good 'purchasing' & ' 'negotiations' thread under PRICING ORDERING, EURO DELIVERY section here.
Also Consumer Reports has a car buying addition out on the newstands. One thing, you can read all you want about negotiating but once your face to face with a dealership employee it's easy to succumb to their tactics. So, either locate THE car or order, negotiate over the Internet, and spend at least twenty minutes reviewing any contract and confirm the price is set and not liable to change at delivery due to their errors or pricing changes. Very nice maybe too nice a car for a teenager. Last edited by overcoil; 05-10-2016 at 07:03 AM.. |

You must have a friend who buys cars on a regular basis to take with you. All kinds of ways you can get yourself in trouble if you don't know what you are doing. If you want the least risky situation financially find an exec demo and lease it for three years. Should be around $400 per month nothing down, drive it and give it back all under warranty.

Seriously!! Props to the OP to scoring such a nice car, whether by gift or accomplishment, but that's a hell of a car for an 18 year old. I learned the limits in something slow and cheap (Honda civic) and I'm glad I did. I would have killed myself if I got one of these in my teens. I stepped up to an Audi TT when I turned 20 and even though it was only $17k, I got lots of negative attention from my cohorts for having a nice car.
Regarding the original question, it really depends on your situation and the dealers as well. I'd recommend looking up invoice and starting there. Invoice on that car should be $46-47k I believe. Whatever you end up doing, please be the cool teenager who drives safe on the street and takes the car to the track/autocross to learn the car properly. |

I want to go in aiming for a 7-9% discount off MSRP. going to ask for 12% knowing that I won't get it. Im already getting a "preferred customer discount" about 3.4k. Any tips on getting price down?

Tried Truecar yet? If you can find a good dealer that's also Truecar certified they'll give you the price. I got my car for $2K under invoice using their service. I went through USAA and Truecar, and Truecar put it at invoice, but USAA had a special for $1K off and at the time additionally BMW offered $1K as an options credit. Worked out well. No negotiation necessary.

I think you get more of a discount on cars in the lot.
I paid 2,000 under invoice for my car here in Houston. M235i Coupe Mineral Gray Metallic Black Dakota Leather M performance Black Grills Heated Seats 18" Orbit Grey 436M w/ Michelin PSS HK Sound Moonroof Tech Pack Driver Assistance M decals (not my choice) Wheel Locks I think I paid around 49,000 out the door with TTL. Also did dealer financing and had a trade in of $2,500 (2006 525i with 176k miles on it) |

please don't be offended, but i am still wrapping my head around the concept of an 18 year old having the funds on hand to purchase or lease this car. Thus I have some questions...
Lets start out with the big one, do you have $50,000 or a reliable income that would allow you to finance or lease an approx. $50,000 car? If $$$ is not an issue, that makes everything easier, doesn't it. If it is an issue, or if someone else (e.g. a parent) is purchasing this car for you as a gift, you may want to consider these points Will you be the person on the title to the car (if purchased) or signing the lease agreement (if leased)? If so, have you looked into what it will cost for you to insure this car and whether that affects your budget. I have to imagine the insurance on this car for an 18 year old (I am assuming you are male - which is probably sexist of me) has to be pretty damn high. If this is being titled/signed for by a parent that would probably minimize the cost a bit. If someone else (who is older) is actually paying for the car or will be the person on the title, have you considered having them do the negotiations. This may be presumptuous of me, but i have to think that an 18 year old vs. a BMW dealership sales dept. is not a fair match. Based on your comment about getting a $3.4k "preferred customer discount" (more on that later) I assume your family has some kind of relationship with this dealer as I cannot imagine you having the time to develop such a relationship in your limited number of years driving. If having someone older is not an option or not preferred, do all of the negotiations via the internet (but, if you plan to finance through BMW they will learn your age). if you do have $50,000 or so to spend on the car and are not otherwise independently wealthy, I strongly encourage you to pick a less expensive car and invest the remainder ("The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest" - Albert Einstein). Assuming money is not an issue, and that you just want the best price... I calculate MSRP on that car at $50,870 and invoice at $47,925 (i assumed Dallas to find out local pricing - so this may be slightly off) The end of the month is typically the best time to get a good deal, and a dealer is always more interested/motivated in selling a car on the lot than in ordering one. I would like to know more about the $3.4k discount you mentioned. Is this applied after you set a price - or before? if it is just a discount off MSRP it is somewhat of a phantom discount. (meaning they apply it to the fictional MSRP in the place of a negotiated discount that is otherwise available to anyone who cares to negotiate) That said - i think you can get the car for below invoice - how much below will depend on several factors - how long has the car been on the lot, how many miles are on the car what is the demand for M235's in that area, has the dealer made his quota or the level he or she needs from manufacturer incentives. My "out the door" price on a 2016 M235 convertible that was on the lot in late October 2015 was almost $1200 below invoice. I think a good deal for you would be in the neighborhood of $47k for that car - but if the factors work in your favor, maybe lower to about $46.5 one approach you can take is to go in wanting a M2 and let them talk you into the M235 they have on the lot. if you project a willingness to wait for an M2 and just the right amount of reluctance to "settle" for a M235, that may make them willing to give a little on the price that they otherwise would not do if they know you want the car they have. Another approach is to make it clear that you are looking at (and are leaning towards a competitor) such as an Audi S3. best of luck, and drive carefully. I'll be the asshole who actually says it. Do yourself a favor and get a 228 and save the extra money for your next car. Lots of fun, you seem more interested in the tech stuff than track days, and unless you're the second coming of Ayrton Senna, is definitely fast enough for you. Since you were not even born yet when he died, there's no way you have enough wheel time to merit the added expense and hazard of the extra power of the 235. Just get the 228, have fun, and throw the extra cash at your next car. The 228, truth be told, is more than fast enough for just about anyone.

People think this is a big deal? I've seen a couple high school kids driving around with M4s...Must be nice. I have to bust my ass for my 3 series, and I will probably kill someone to own an M235...if then, I probably won't get one.

M240 Annoucement may put pressure on M235i Price
With the announcement of the new 240i you may find it easier to negotiate for the 235i. If you wait until the 240's start appearing you may be able to purchase an in stock 235i at a great price.
Of course you may also want to order the 240i instead!!! |

If you were in a situation where you needed a car right away and at the same time there was a changeover from old to new model year then the attempt of a good deal with the older model year panned out, then great.
If you have the time and hence the ability to accumulate additional funds then go with the new 2017, the torque increase in itself is worth the expense. |
