Headlamp question
So it just occurred to me that the inner-most headlight has absolutely no purpose.
Is it even real, or is it just a globe of glass or plastic to keep the car "looking" like a BMW with quad headlights? |

Hmm... What happens if you pull the turn signal stalk toward you? Which light flashes? In my soon-to-be-replaced 06 E90 330i, the inner light flashes on when I do that, though it is also used as DRL.

Since its bi-xenon the shutter in the outer light lifts up. The inner one is just there to have the LED ring and have a dummy lens to look like other BMW.

i was just wondering about this an hour ago while drying the car after a wash. i thought that at the least it would be a DRL along with the halo's. oh well at least i don't have to wonder whether that bulb was broken or not

They should configure it as an auxiliary driving/fog light.

What puzzles me is the cornering lights: on my E90 3-Series, the outer lamps were swivelling xenons like the M235i but the inner pair provided the cornering lamps (shining outwards rather than forwards). The M235i UK handbook says "In sharp turns ... either the fog lights or the cornering light switches on." I have seen 1-Series using their fog lights as cornering lights but we don't have fog lights. However, the quote from the handbook suggests that there is another type of cornering light too. Is this another trick that the xenons can play? And the inner heat-sinks? Are they really just dummies, seems expensive for something that's only visible when the bonnet is open. |

They should have used those dummy lights for cornering lights. That would have made good use.

Are you sure? On my E90 that was true but it had an obvious lens and instructions in the handbook on how to change the bulb. On the M235i, neither of these are true.
I have tried (call me sad) to get the cornering light to illuminate and then get out of the car to inspect it - I remain confused. Are there any special preconditions to making this work? |
