228i rumbling noise?

Does anyone else have a rumbling noise when driving past 80mph in their 228i? Mine is a n20 and manual. Originally I thought it was the ASD so I bypassed it, then thought maybe it was the stock exhaust but I switched it to a Supersprint axleback, now I'm thinking it might be the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. But, I am wondering if my car is just broken or other people are having the same rumbling noise in their 228i.

Same model year, engine, and transmission, but no such noise here at any speed.

Rumbling noise? Is the car wobbling at higher speeds? It could be a tire out of balance or an alignment issue? Did it start recently and have you hit a pothole or curb recently? There's way too many variables for anyone to tell you what it could be without a more detailed description.

Maybe don't drink and drive that way you will stop drifting onto the side of the road to hit the rumble strips.

Since things like exhaust and ASD are mentioned, check the underside of car to make sure the belly pan isn’t lose or misaligned. I had a Mercedes where the exhaust heat shield got bent down into the air flow and caused a pulsating howling noise at speed.

No wobbling of any sort. BMW did just install new Super Sport tires about 2000 miles ago. But that didn’t make the change in noise. The rumbling noise is similar to an exhaust that drones.

I’ll check into that. It’s really odd, the car will be dead silent inside the cabin with windows rolled up until it starts moving at 81mph+ then the rumbling/howling starts.

I owned a new 2016 228i RWD 6MT....P7 runflats.
When I traded the car in for a X3M40i the tires had 38,000 original miles. Rotated and balanced every 10K miles, good even wear.

But...the tires became increasing "hummie" (if that's a word) as the tread wore down. Droning at highway speeds.

The car had no issues with the drive train.

Any chance it might be a wheel bearing? I have a 2015 228i and it doesn't make any strange noises... good luck! Hope you get it sorted out soon.
