Finally! And I think I set a record!
After 4 months or so of looking hard for the right M235, I finally am a member of the club! Flew from Nashville to New Jersey a couple days ago and bought a 2014 Estoril Blue MT with only 7,500 miles on it. Tech package, Premium package, and Light package. Harmon Kardon. Previous owner also put the M Performance carbon spoiler, front splitter, and pedals. Man, I love this car.
Only problem is, I think I set a new record for shortest amount of time owning a 235 before getting a speeding ticket. Driving back home yesterday through VA, I got a speeding ticket on I81. And the trouble is, the cop said I was going 82 (even though I had my cruise set on 79), which is 12 miles over the speed limit and thus a reckless driving ticket! UGH. I am going to go to my BMW dealer and see if they will calibrate my speedo to see if there was an error and that I can get it reduced to just a speeding ticket. Good grief. But I'm still a happy man! |

I had the same thing happen to me in WA last month. I had cruise set to 110km/h (68mph) and I got radar'd doing "76mph" in a 60 zone. I literally LOL'd in the officers face, in shock about his comment/reasoning for pulling me over. He was very polite and professional, though. He still gave me a minimum 5mph speeding ticket... Why not jam me with the 16mph over ? Maybe he was just nice, but something tells me his instrument was off, big time. Almost seemed as if they lack confidence in their own technology..

12mph is reckless driving? LOL. In Kansas you need to be doing 21mph+ to get that ticket.
Your speedometer is set by BMW to read 2-3mph higher than actual. So if you set the cruise at 79mph, then you're really only going 76-77mph assuming you're on stock size tires. As the tires get worn, the error becomes less. I've confirmed this 2-3mph matter with two GPS units. You might want to see what your GPS says when you set the cruise and see if the GPS readings are at odds with the speedometer. Then argue to the judge that while you were speeding, you do not believe you were going 12mph over because the cruise was set, BMW builds in speedometer error, and you've confirmed the error with a GPS. They're not going to let you off, but chances are (if you're professional about this), they'll reduce your ticket to below a reckless driving citation. OR you could spend $500-700 and hire an attorney to likely argue the same point and other legal BS attorneys use to get repeat speeders off. |

Typically in VA, reckless is given when you are 20 mph over the speed limit and it becomes a little grey when the speed limit is higher (like 70 mph) and you get stopped at 82 which is supposed to be reckless too. Most of the time the cops in that case just give you a speeding ticket but since you were on 81 and likely passing through some rural areas, the VSP there can be total dicks. The VA laws for reckless are kind of outdated and the 80 mph automatic reckless rule was established way before there were any 65 or 70 mph speed limits in VA. For those suggesting Waze, it's a little worthless in VA when you're outside of the major city center areas which 81 mostly is. |

Talked to a VA lawyer today. Since I have a clean record he is confident he can get the charge dismissed if I do a day of driving class here in TN. Gonna cost me $700 for the lawyer but not nearly as much as the ticket and travel for day in court, etc. What a racket there in VA.

Sorry about that ... It should have been a regular speeding ticket either way

Did you buy that car from BMW of Tenafly? I'm 99% sure that you bought my old car when I upgraded to an M2.
Here they are together for the first and last time. |

The crazy thing is you even sent me a PM to try and buy my car from me directly but I wasn't sure at the time that I'd go ahead with buying the M2.
Also another way to tell if its my car is if it has an Opticoat Pro sticker on the windshield just up by the BMW Roadside Assistance one, it was coated by Phil DetailersDomain. I picked it up with the plastic still on it and drove it right over there and he did all the prep on the car including the Opticoat Pro. |
