why is M235 more expensive in west coast usa?

it seems to me that california dealers won't do much discount on the m235(not much off MSRP), but in northeast, dealers have pretty good deals, comparably.

Anyone know why?

My guess is the the demographic in west coast, creates a very high demand for 2ers while in the northeast, not as many people are interested in the 2er. I think people in northeast who need a car and can afford a 2er usually need a bigger car.

Supply/demand. It's a more limited production car with fewer allocations and warm weather states where more people prefer RWD sporty cars have higher demand then the north east where most people want an X3 or X drive 3 series.

Even still, the discounts on 2 series are rarely as good as the high volume cars that can be had pretty easily right around invoice.

I got 500 knocked off my M235i, I was there for hours, they would not budge. It started to get awkward. Instead I negotiated my trade value aggressively and came out happy.

With ED or PCD deliveries as options, why pay more? Last time I shipped a car west to east, covered auto transport cost me around $1200. Or better, yet drive it east back to west. After-all, it was they are meant to be.

I am on east coast, I actually asked a few west coast dealers for PCD delivery and they had much higher prices than local dealers

Do euro delivery...

There are just more people on the west coast snapping the limited allocations.

I do all the BS from my computer / phone. 500 Bux is nothing compared to the loss of hours of your time. Sometimes using the trade is a great way to get more fat off the bone. Sounds like they left you little choice in the deal but to get a larger trade allowance.

I've been sayng this for months especially when people do these price comparisons between a well equipped 228 and a 235 and how the 235 is only "a little more money" than the 228. Just not so on the West Coast.

This is good news dealers are not discounting which means existing owners car value will not drop.
In my business I never discount I will charge more if I know a buyer will ask for a discount before I confirm a price and then drop the price back to what it should be after the so called discount is given. More company's should stop discounts, charge a true fare price like Apple and look how they can sell products.

Yup.
I sell high-priced services too. Very well.
You never hear Apple talk about the price.
Rather it's the quality of the product and the experience it provides.

There are other variables and approaches you can take on a sale:

Time:
Quicker is more valuable.
If they can't give you a break on price, can they get it to you quicker?
Or if you can wait for 4 weeks, can they knock x off the price?

Volume:
"If I buy 2 cars, what can you do for me?"
Of course this usually isn't practical

Future Business:
"I buy 5 cars every 10 years...are you going to be the guy that I do that with?"

Bundles:
Think "Happy Meal" at McDonald's. Burger, fries, drink and toy. Significant discount when bought together.
If you're going to buy M performance brakes, a bike rack, new rims and a car, see what they can do if bought as a package.

Freebies:
Can you throw in a free shirt, mug, hat and floor mats?

Rebates:
You're seeing this more and more in stores.
Not a discount, which cheapens the cost of the initial purchase, but rather a reward on subsequent purchases:

10% Discount= Man buys $100 shirt for $90
10% rebate = Man buys $100 shirt for $100. Get's $10 rebate, feeling good about this.
Man is now incentivized to re-visit store to use his $10 rebate, so he buys another $100 shirt for $90.

If he uses it, store gives a $10 discount on $200 of sales.
If he never uses it, the store gets full price on the original order.

So if you know you're going to use it, see if you can finagle a rebate of sorts.
"Give me x% discount on any paid parts or service I buy from you for the next x years."
If you don't come back, it costs him nothing. If you do, you've earned some loyalty points.

why is it that the 228i has deeper discounts when its built at same leipzig plant as the M235, with limited capacity?

I don't think the 228i is coming out of allocations.

Do European Delivery. I got almost 14% off my msrp With David Alviles of Steve Thomas BMW although nobody else were able to match that price because it's just not profitable for them.

I got 10% off of MSRP, regular delivery, when most dealers wanted to do only $500 off of msrp

I think you just have to keep calling around and find someone who wants to work with you, though you might have to wait a while and order one.

Last year they both came out of allocation, don't know about this year. Dealers are almost treating the M235 like M4, low allocation so why discount them much. Every one my dealer gets (M235) he sells quickly. The M235 conv was on his website undelivered and sold within a week but the 228's seem to sit longer 6-8 weeks or longer. I think ordering you may get a better discount than trying to find one on a lot. I got $1,500 off last May (ordered in March) but they treat orders almost like its plus business and face it there's less SG&A expenses if it never sits in their inventory.

yeah, that's why one of the dealers was saying regarding the m235, is that they have limited allocation for their "m cars"

+1

I got over 10% off msrp too

And they would have taken more off an instock car because I ordered mine

OP Maybe buy the car on the east coast and ship it maybe the dealer will split the shipping or take a bit more off? To offset the cost, I wouldn't accept $500 off only. Hope you find a good deal!!!
