M240i running in oil service for peace of mind, is it needed?

Ok, so I’ve done just over 1200 miles now, trying my best not to go over 4500 revs. Now I’m ready to enjoy the car.
My question is how many of you guys have paid to have a precautionary oil service, and is it really needed with modern engines and oils?
I’ve seen people say it’s not needed, even the BMW service guys are saying not to worry knowing I’m willing to pay for it.
If it were a lease car I wouldn’t bother but it’s not so I’m wondering what you guys think? It’s about £236 for a standard oil service in the UK.
Also I have the service pack so I do not want them to update the service record within the car so I get the next one done for free at the right time, i assume this can be requested and it doesn’t automaticly reset itself?
At the moment it’s saying November 2019 or 18k miles, whatever comes first (probably November 2019)

This has been discussed in the past....I changed the oil in my M235i myself (it is so easy) at 1,800 miles. It cost me $70. for the Penzoil Euro 5-40 (premium) oil and BMW filter + 1 hour of my own labor. I slept better afterwards.

I did my first change at 1200 miles. Is it necessary? That's debatable but I do plan on keeping the car so it was worth the $110 I spent.

I used to do an early oil change, and I might do it this time. I'm at about 3500 right now and it's winter.

My first oil change was 1 Year. 6,000 miles. You folks are free to spend your money on whatever you want.

I was having my exhaust/midPipe installed at roughly 1100/1200 miles (back in oct 2017) and the dealer did my oil for free without me even asking, but I have read time and time again not to worry about a 1200 mike oil change, ...... so this probably helps no one

Yes, but that is different than the 12,000 miles when my car told me to change the oil the first time, which I think is nuts.

I've got 1,600 mi. on my M240i and plan to get an early first oil change at 2,000. I need to take it in anyway to mount my front license plate.

Well, here in the UK the car says the first oil change is after 18000 miles or 2 years. 2 years is likely to be the case in my case.
I think I’ll get it done but may leave it a few more miles. I assume they can do it without resetting the car.

I had my oil changed by a local specialist BMW independent after a year. Most of the cost is actually the oil. They also changed the microfilter i.e. a '1st oil service' As I'm on a BMW Service plan I fortunately told the Independent not to update the Service Log on the car, as I wanted the 18K/24m change that I'd paid for up front. On reflection, I shouldn't have bothered with the Service plan but I was doing a lot higher mileage when I bought the car. A couple of the UK BMW Owners Forums have Registers of Independents that people have used and recommend e.g. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/...&f=72&t=796191

Out of interest what specialist did you take it too, I’m quite local so might be close to me.
If you don’t mind me asking what did you pay for your service pack? I got mine included in the price but they were selling it at £299 for 3 years, for that I will get a minimum oil change, break fluid change and inspection in the 3 years, depending on mileage maybe a full service inc spark plugs too. so I still think it’s worth it.

There are many opinions, but there is a special break-in oil used in some cars (not sure about ours) that helps the valves to seal, and you are better off keeping it in for several thousand miles. I think 1200 may be too early. Personally, I will change mine at 5K, 11K (free), 16K, 22K (free), then every 7.5K. I use liqui-moly or BMW oil. I've never had consumption issues and tend to keep to over 150K. I'm almost all highway. If I was more urban I might keep to 5K intervals.

There is no harm to change the oil early/more frequently. (except environment BS and your wallet)
If they use some special 'break in' oil, it will be all over the owners manual with warning label. "Do Not Change Oil too early....etc".

I personally just stick to BMW's maintenance indicator.
First oil service around 8000 miles and now it's saying in 9000 miles.

Proper BMW spec oil will maintain viscosity up to 15k miles in normal use.
If you track a lot, change it more frequently. (it will be reflected to the maintenance indicator anyway)

Good thing is that M240 has great cooling system so the engine oil temperature will be super stable.
So there is less chance of oil goes bad from overheating.

In short, if it makes you sleep better at night, do the oil change. No harm will be done. (potentially better for your engine)
Even if you follow BMW's schedule, it's not gonna be an issue as well.

I own and plan to keep the car 8 year / 100K mi.
I asked my dealer to do mine at 1200mi and not reset the service interval. They did and comp't it as good will in response to an issue I had.
And then, I had the standard one at 10K mi.
Going forward, I will have mine done every 5K mi and ask them to use 5w40, instead of the 0w30 they normally use.
This may not be necessary, but it makes me feel good and that's what matters.

The standard one as in when the car said it was due?
Is this differnt depending on country? My car says it’s first oil change is due at 18,000 miles!

Yes, when the car said it was due. Mine was at about 9800 mi.

From new mine said 18,000 miles, now I’ve done 1200 miles it says 17,000 miles, that’s a bit concerning why some cars are different

I DK specific schedules, but they do change by location/origin - I think the EU and third-world intervals are also super long. Here in USA I think it is 10k, probably more for marketing reasons. This is a very popular topic, so if you do a search you may find a few (dozen) threads about details, conspiracy theories, etc. Bottom line is that it is not 'necessary' since BMW gets to say that, and it is not as important for break-in as it used to be on older style engines; but overall the popular opinion is that it makes sense to spend a few hundred on insuring engine longevity (if that - ours are only about $60 IIRC).

I stick to this schedule too. BMW oil is now made at Pennzoil. Their website recommends Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5-30 as standard and 5-40 as a premium oil for the M2. http://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/oil-se...NfRUZ0OFBuRnNK
The oil is available on Amazon.
Also, even if the oil maintains its viscosity at higher mileage, the filter will not remove chemical contaminants that collect in the oil, an oil analysis will confirm this.
