I don't believe that was the question I asked. The owner's manual (US market) includes this language now under Comfort Access:


"Do not place the remote control in the cargo area
Take the remote control with you and do not leave it in the cargo area; otherwise, the re‐ mote control is locked inside the vehicle when the trunk lid is closed."◀

A Honda Civic will do the same...I would assume a BMW would as well; but if you don't have comfort access then I would assume you could lock the key in the trunk as it wouldn't know where it was.

Well coming from daily driving a 1980s Porsche (which I locked the keys of inside before), I was pretty impressed.

Total bs about comfort access since I have it and the trunk will not open with your keys in the trunk and the car locked. The doors will not open with the keys locked in the trunk with comfort access.
Lock your car, go to the trunk, open the trunk and throw your keys in without ever unlocking the doors and you are screwed even with comfort access. Went running and went to my trunk, opened the trunk threw my fanny pack in the trunk with my keys in it, shut the trunk and I was locked out with comfort access in the last year on my M235.

And yes. I did the same test in a controlled environment with my dad. It basically was look at this cool trick (my 3 series would immediately pop the trunk). Basically it was me just locking the keys in the trunk followed by a look of disapproval from dad and public admonishment from him saying "a lexus would never do this".

^Really surprised they don't include that feature. My parents' Acura ILX (keyless) will beep and pop the trunk back open if you throw the key in it 90% of the time...Of course the one time I was coming home late in a thunderstorm I did the same exact thing as Lucky13, threw my bag with the key in it and the car didn't recognize that the key was in the trunk, and I was stranded. Go figure. Surprised BMW doesn't include this, I always believed BMWs were "over engineered" and that's why you paid extra for one

Earlier cars with Comfort Access had this feature to prevent locking keys in trunk. My 2008 E92 did More recent ones apparently don't. My 2013 F10 doesn't. No one on earth knows why the change.

Marginal reduction in the cost of producing the car, perhaps as a function of an additional RFID sensor in the trunk area.

FWIW, when I play golf I put my keys in my golf bag . When I got back to my car, I put the bag in trunk (no small feat with my donut). When I tried to close the lid it refused to lock. Checked clearance and it was fine. Then I remembered keys in bag. Removed them, and lid closed properly.

If you have the valet key to manually open the driver door and the trunk release button doesn't work, it's because you have the valet lock mode on in the glove box. Unlock the glove box with the key and slide the valet/trunk lock switch to the right to unlock. Then you can use the trunk release button by the kick panel.

sorry to revive this thread, but I dealt with this today. the solution is super simple.

jump the car. I hooked up the jumper cables to my wife's car and the thing came to life enough to wake the edu and work the widgets. opened the trunk. done.

This is not true, I have comfort access and accidently threw my keys into the trunk after running and doors would not open. Opened trunk, not doors, threw keys from a running pouch into trunk and shut the trunk without opening doors. Doors and trunk would not open.

I was in the office when I wrote that and could have sworn there was a pass-through. Grabbed something from the trunk a little while ago and realized how wrong I was. Shows how often I look in the back seat.
