Braking Worse in Sport/Sport mode?

With trans in sport mode, and especially with car in sport mode as well, I feel that braking is not as good because the 8-speed is rev-matching and downshifting, resulting in engine-braking coming in and going on and coming in and going out as it down-shifts. Results in a sort of pulsating deceleration.

Thoughts?

I'm not all surprised that you can feel the surges as the transmission aggressively downshifts while in Sport mode. Mine does the same thing, as it should.

Having said that, my brakes still work the same - and that is to say, really good! I would be incredibly surprised if braking power was effected in any manner.

Yeah I?ve done multiple aggressive stops from around 60mph - smash the brake full ABS stop. With sport engaged there is no diminished stopping power.

Different? Yeah. There is a lot more transmission braking going on in Sport/Sport+ mode. Worse? I won't say that, just feels different.

The brakes on this car don't bite as hard as they do on some other BMW's, suprisingly my wife's X1 shudders to a halt with the gentlest press of the pedal which always throws me off when I borrow it, but they do stop you very quickly if you stamp on them in any mode

You shouldn't compare pedal FEEL with stopping power. I think the brakes feel a bit softer at times, but they definitely stop the car. As for the aggressiveness you are feeling is the downshifting. It is definitely not a smooth stopping event, but it is fun

yes, it could be that the pulsing of deceleration is due to an intermittent increase and decrease in braking effect from the engine.

Assuming I am driving in a sporty manner, I actually LIKE that it downshifts more aggressively. It’s much more likely to be in the gear that I want and/or need it to be.

This is probably cause you are going too slow or braking too little....
If you are coming fast enough and stopping hard enough... you shouldn't even notice the engine braking....

Valid. People rarely use full braking. If you?re moving and really hit it, as in push your foot through the firewall as hard as you can, the car does the job extremely well.

Agreed - I had to find out two days ago how well these cars stop - I was more worried about the car behind me than actually hitting the car in front. I am sure that 9/10 owners will never fully brake these cars to the point ABS needs to intervene on a dry surface with summer tires that are at operating temps, they stop very well.

Had that happen to me yesterday. Track hard foot to the pedal with the collision avoidance horn going off, ABS on full, car shuddering - it sure as hell did stop and quick. Despite a soft pedal feel, these cars can stop.

yes i imagine in ABS mode it’ll be fine. in mildly aggressive braking, the kind that makes my wife grab onto something but not complain, there seems to be a variance in deceleration, i suppose due to the increase/decrease in engine braking as it shifts down.

Myself, I don't mind it, but if you are not driving aggressively enough, the downshifting and braking under moderate driving can irritate your passenger (my gf for instance haha).

I guess if you want to be kind to passengers, you can set it to comfort, unless you are going balls to the wall.
