PSA cold weather
Just a quick PSA.
If you live in colder climates little bastarss are looking for places warm to nest. If you see something like this. Better start looking as to were they are making a nest. This happend over a 48 hr period of time. This is my daily driver. I always do an under hood check each time I fill up with fuel ( old habits die hard) when cars I owned had dip sticks check the oil look for leaks, damaged/ worn belts ect. So I just filled up this Friday everything was good parked the car in the garage this evening popped the hood saw this found a nice nest under the engine cover right by the coil pack wiring harness. Will have to fix the ground wire to the # 3 cylinder and it looks like #4 wiring also has a little chewing on it.] |

This is largely why I made this uninsulated engine cover from a E series 540i. I want to keep the engine bay from being a cozy place for rodents and to also be able to easily inspect the valve cover and such.
I ran my M235 for 2 years without an engine cover. No issues. Just maybe a marginal increase in motor sound which isn't a bad thing with the N55.

They'll still try if it's cold enough and the car is parked outside. These cars (especially the B58) hold heat for a long time. Add that with some nice chewy insulation and soy based wire coating, sounds like a sweet deal.
I still remember pulling little mummified mice out of my bumper cover on my last car, it's hard to forget things like that. |

True, but still does not hurt to give them a regular reminder it's a bad place to raise a family.

That sounds like a great preventative measure. Mine lives in the garage way more than I’d like. She also hibernates as I don’t want her to see the salty nh roads in the winter. I’ll have to make more frequent mouse checks.

Note that cats won't necessarily do what you want or expect them to do.

That said, they've been great with the rats and mice around here. The only ones we ever see have been left dead in the yard. |

Parked the car for the holidays and decided to put the car on charger for a top off. Decided to pop off the strut brace and engine cover after seeing little poops.
Poop on almost all flat surfaces, even the hood latches, insulation chew under the engine cover thankfully no visible wires damaged. The point of entry was above the passenger fender right by the VIN sticker. Sprayed some fluid film in all the nooks and crannies but will likely be picking up some traps this week. The car is DD'd except this weekend, I doubt it's all from one wild Christmas party. Last edited by freakystyly; 12-26-2023 at 08:54 PM.. |

Had this problem a couple of years ago. It was an EU mandate to change insulation on wiring. Cost me a trip to the dealer for wiring repairs.
Tried mothballs and they worked OK. Got some "Rodent Defense" all natural spray from Amazon. Smells a little when wet-stopped the problem. No varmits seen since. |

Picked up some pepper spray concoction... it got me coughing when spraying the engine bay so hopefully the rodents feel the same way.
Hopefully BMW learned to make a less hospitable place for the furry critters with the new generation cars. |

Oh no. I’d lose my mind. Friends with campers tell me they’ve had decent luck with Grandpa Gus peppermint packs stashed in the corners & entry points. I may invest in a bunch soon. Dryer sheets worked well to keep mice out of my motorcycle that’s lived way too long in my shed. https://www.amazon.com/Grandpa-Guss-Mouse-Repellent-Pouches/dp/B07JMDYDVJ |
