B48 oil filter

It looks like one of the down sides to using a Mini transverse mounted engine in an S2 is the oil filter location. Do you have to remove the piece of plastic above the rear of the motor and move/unclip two bundles of wires above it to get to the filter? Free oil changes for 3 years but I'm planning ahead.

A picture of what you are describing will help.

Snarky answer to follow: I started to get a picture but then I realized you don't know what you're talking about. If you haven't done it then you don't know any more than I do. If you have done it you would know the answer.

Edit: Make sure to follow the oil filter housing cap torque spec to prevent leaks.

Engine layout and the fact that a variant of the engine is used transversely in the Mini has nothing to do with the filter location. All of the modular 3, 4 & 6 cylinder “B” engines primarily developed for BMW vehicles but also used in Minis have the oil filter at the back when used longitudinally, along with the reversed Vanos system. No problem in accessing it if you follow the correct documentation (as Sindarin has posted).

On the bottom of the oil filter housing, there's a small plastic nut that can be removed which allows excess oil in the filter to be drained prior to removing the housing.

I neglected to remove the nut after draining and excess oil poured out everywhere, was a PITA to clean up. The new BMW OEM MAHLE filter kit comes with a new plastic nut to be screwed into the housing prior to reinstall. If your filter didn't come with this piece, just be prepared with lots of shop towels.
The B48 oil filter in the longitudinal mounted vehicles (2,3,4,5,X3) is accessed from the top so no oil filter cap drain plug. Only the transversely mounted vehicles (X1, MINI) is accessed from the bottom, cap facing down which is why there is a drain plug.

Thanks, pardon my ignorance. Deleted!

Thank you. Doesn't look like there's enough room vertically to extract the filter but I'm not going to argue with the shop manual Does the sealing strip just pull straight up to loosen?
