Any Way to Change Car Shut Off Procedures?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My M235i is my first BMW, and although it may be a minor complaint, the dual press of the Start button (once with foot on brake, once without) is driving me crazy. A thousand times now I get in the house and can still hear the radio. Or...I accidentally leave my foot on the brake for the second press of the button and the car starts back up.

Is there any way to change this to a single press total shut off?

You can code the radio to turn off on engine off

The radio is a safety exit alarm. It calls you back so you won't leave your battery on for a "run-down". Those engineers think of everything so you can start the car the next morning.

You'll get used to it soon enough. Typically my arrive home routine is - stop, put in park, close the garage door, shut off engine, set brake, collect phone, books, etc, second press, pull door twice and out. About 20 seconds to complete, but the time spent collecting stuff allows me to make sure the door is closing before i shut it all off.

How long does it stay on if you don't lock the car?

From the manual.. (I was curious myself as I never thought about it..)

The radio-ready state switches off automatically:
▷ After approx. 8 minutes.
▷ When the vehicle is locked using the central locking system.
▷ Shortly before the battery is discharged completely, so that the engine can still be started.

All good suggestions. Zoomigo, your process flow is excellent, and I may need to come up with a checklist like that, I just never have had To do such a thing in any other car ive owned.

Well, I'm a bit OCD, and have learned over the years that if I make changes to routines, I make mistakes. Once I figured out a process, it keeps me organized and mistake free.

You can also code to unlock doors on engine off so no double pull too

I do that. But with the top down and getting gas people stare. There is only so much ke$ha people can take during a full up

I coded turning off radio and unlock doors on engine off. Also, auto lock doors at the max speed possible (20 mph). Makes everything very simple and convenient when I stop to pick up mail form the postal box and then slowly drive through the neighborhood on the way home. Locking doors with the car in my garage has its own inconveniences if I need to get something out of the car.

Kind of stupid easy to lock it by pressing on the handle - why don't you?

This is aggravating to me because my 2011 BMW does shut everything off with a long press of the button. Seems like something they changed for no good reason other than being bloody Germans!

I have a tendency to hit the button the second time while I still have my foot on the clutch, which of course restarts the car!

Yeah it's crazy hard to hit the power button on the radio when you're pumping gas. Seriously?

Also, what's this jibba jabber about foot on the brake to turn the car off. I think someone is a little mixed up. Try this when shutting down:

1) Put car in park
2) Place your feet wherever you feel they are most appropriate to be
3) Single press the starter button OFF
4) Now you have CHOICES! a) Get out and lock your car, b) Single press the power button on the radio, or c) Let the radio shut off after 8 min.

Problems solved.

Just think of it this way:

The first press puts the car into park, so it's not really an increased number of actions that you have the take because it replaces the need to put it into P. Instead of pressing one button to put it into park, and then pressing another button somewhere else to shut the car off, you just press one single button twice.
