Catted downpipe... tune required?

Hey all,

Just planning ahead to get a little extra power out of my M235i. I have been considering a high flow catted downpipe. Will I still throw a CEL if I don't have a tune or piggyback like a JB4.

I do plan to add the JB4 later, just curious if I take the JB4 off for service if the car will throw a CEL while at the dealer.

Only mods to car will be High flow Catted DP and JB4. Mainly doing the DP for sound and a bump in power. I do not want to change the axleback etc.

have you looked into any of fabspeeds work? they have a dp that doesnt throw any codes and dyno numbers listed as well- tune isnt required, the ecu will adjust accordinly. as far as removing the jb4 before taking it in for dealer service im not sure

with a flash tune, no cel with cattless dp. Jb4 will no longer reset codes as of right now, so yes you will get a code, and will have to put ur oem cat back on for inspections depending on the state you live in.

Make sure who ever does the job resets all the condition tests.

Also, read through the folder as this has been covered a bunch of times.

I have a catted downpipe (fabspeed), MPE, and no tune. Works great! As you, I did it mainly for sound.

My commute home yesterday. 1 Mile, 22 minutes. I don't exactly need the extra power.

Thanks guys really appreciate it. Is Fabspeed the only known Catted DP to not throw a code?

wagner is a solid catted dp, didn't throw any codes.

important to note, the catted DP's will throw a code eventually. Could be in 2 months, could be 2 years, could be 20 years, but eventually you will get one.

I personally have been running my Sport Cat on my M235i for 2 years now and I haven't had a single issue. I also have gotten countless people setup with on and have not had one person throw a CEL. It is the best modification you can do to your M235i/335i/435i/M2.

Check your PMs - I'd love to chat more!

There's also the HJS 300cel available from Fabspeed if you want a little bit more scrubbing than their 200cel.

We do have the HJS Euro 6 downpipe but we found the 200-cell HJS cat core accomplishes the same goals, makes more power, and is cheaper!

I reached out to him via PM. I have probably sold over 250 of these downpipes and I've had 4 incidences where a customer got a CEL. Each time was due to either an installation error, gasket failure, clamp failure, etc. Once they fixed it, they were good to go and haven't had an issue since. I think something may have worked itself loose in this case - I'm sure something minor. Regardless, we'll get him taken care of!

Downpipe catless or catted do not require a tune. We advise to get a tune with DP for all the additional power that can be gained.

Our best cattted downpipe seller is Wagner and Fabspeed.

Helpful tip - Unplugging the O2 sensor, like I've experienced in other cars, can be like solving a puzzle. I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, but getting these unplugged without breaking them was the biggest challenge on this install.

As expected, the solution was easy.

The small gray notch on the back pops up, then you can simply push down on that notch and it releases the connector.

Can anybody tell me the difference and pros/cons between the catted Wagner and catted Fabspeed, Im interested in either/or. Does one drone more or less than the other? Does one add more HP and torque? Also how long does install take if you are mechanically inclined, may take off for warranty and service work while on warranty. I notice the Fabspeed is much more expensive.

Im more looking to add performance over extra sound, quieter the better. Also I dont plan on upgrading exhaust as I like the sound of the factory setup.

Also any issues with running downpipe and BMS stage 1 tuner?

Our Sport Cat utilizes a 200-cell, HJS, tri-metallic cat core. This is hands down the best care core on the market. It flows 85-90% of a straight pipe, so you will get 85-90% of the sound and power of a catless setup, but guarantees no CEL issues.

Does the Fabspeed use a higher quality catt over the Wagner, that will last longer? Does the Fabspeed guarantee no code where the Wagner has a better chance of a code? Does the Fabspeed fit and install better? Just want to fully understand why Fabspeed is double the price before proceeding. Can anyone from Wagner chime in also? Appreciate all the help and sorry for jacking the thread with all these questions.
