I don't think there is such a thing? They are usually replaced individually when they fail, otherwise I have yet to see aftermarket coil-over-plug options for any of my VAG cars, or the BMW..

Curious, though, but every time I see a 600+whp build sheet on newer German cars (all brands), it seems like coils are always factory, unless on standalone..

Well on VAG cars people (even me when i had one) use the R8 coils as an upgrade. But i was mainly asking out of interest because ive seen some for the n54 but idk about the n55 haha just curious if there were any aftermarket ones put there

Ah yes, the old "Red Coil" upgrade.. I never did it or felt the need to when I was making 570awhp on my A4, so I figured it was always for looks

I think we have a pretty strong base foundation with the N55, or at least I like to believe so. It it's anything like an old VW 1.8t, or newer EA888, we have nothing to worry about south of 600whp for engine management and ignition control. Something to be grateful for, imo, lol..

Here's a link, although I haven't used them. May order them when it is time to replace the spark plugs.

Unless you're going for 600+ whp I don't think anyone would ever NEED these. And unless a reputable tuner can prove that this is a limiting factor with the factory BMW coils, I'd never be inclined to change them. If VW 4-cyl cars can make north of 600whp on their shotty coils, the BMW ones must be fine, for our needs.

Since I haven't tried these, I can't say for certain. However, back in my days of souping up normally aspirated V-8 sedans, I know what adding a high performance coil made a difference. You could hear some cars "banging" on the high end and often the better coil, along with colder plugs would cure this. Also, I know that as rpm increases and as cylinder pressures increase, the spark becomes less effective at igniting the air/fuel mixture. Obviously, our cars rev higher than those old street sedans in most cases and, since they were normally aspirated and ours are turbocharged, the cylinder pressures in our cars are much higher. So I can easily imagine that a more reliable, hotter spark might boost performance. Hard to say how much difference it might make and whether that difference would be worth $1,000.

Yeah no doubt, it's a tough call. Best bet is to try and match up an ignition coil, to an OEM one that's used on a higher output engine, like maybe the bi-turbo V8 in the N63? And see if there's any advantage with the change. If it'll even be compatible, is another question, but from experience in the VAG world, they're almost all interchangeable within the same brand of car.

I feel that if an engine tuner was seeing the requirement for something like this, we'd have heard of it already, and would be suggested on the PS2 and big turbo 3.0t i6 cars that are currently running 30-40% higher power output than most of us. But this could very well be a great addition, and I could be completely wrong. But until my car starts breaking up (up top), I'll look at spending $1k elsewhere
