Is there way to just have the temp info from the ECU computer outputted to an LCD gauge? I'd like to add a temp gauge but don't want those round gauges on my A-pillar or dash. Just want a small LCD screen to tell me what temp its at. something simple.
I am wondering if via enhanced blue tooth could you capture that info via some app out there like Torque.

For me, I think there are four essential pieces of information that should be available at a glance on the cluster. Especially on a high performance car, but applies to any. Speed, RPM, Temp, and Fuel.

Some bean counter just decided "our customers don't care about that" and decided to delete it for no good reason. How much does a temp gauge cost? $2?
None taken my man.

I was just pointing out how I looked at it - it is funny you mention bean counters too - in my original review of going from the E82 to F22, I said something almost exactly like that.

I also like to know when the oil is hot enough so that I can rev the engine freely - I don't rev the shit out of my Duc until it hits two dots on the temp gauge, same concept here...so trust me, we are in alignment for the need of this information.

My guess is that it will "appear" in future MYs of the car...much like the original temp gauge in the N54s went from 210 in the middle to 250 or something like that...

Why BMW decided we needed an electronic MPG gauge over a temp gauge is just idiotic. Hopefully a software change will allow us to toggle between a temp gauge and MPG gauge. I don't think there is any other model without a temp gauge.

I hope there will be too. It would be nice to just be able to display this on the NAV screen or something.

That is what the P3 gauge does. It mounts in half of the driver side AC vent. It is hardwired (but looks easy to install) with hidden wiring.

I inquired on a coding forum about the possibility of some coding to enable the temps displayed on the cluster without entering the hidden menus but was told it was not possible.

Yea the gauge is nice and has a lot of features. Its a bit expensive for me as i only want temp info. I don't need all the other features it offers. And i really don't want to take up half my vent. I was hoping to find a small rectangular shaped digital temp readout. Something you would hardly notice at a glance but i would know its there.
Oh well I'll figure something out.

I hope it's just from a lack of knowledge and experience so far. After limping my N55 due to overheating, I want to keep track of temps, without adding a big zit to my dash. Personal preference. Hopefully they'll make the change for MY15. Along with adding Valencia orange for the 235

If you are planning on mounting your phone somewhere visible, there is an app / bluetooth transmitter combo you can use. The transmitter plugs into the data port and the phone displays whatever info you want. I can try and dig up the link if it's something of interest.

I'm going to play the other side of the field here for a moment. How necessary is the temp gauge?

As long as you drive moderately for the first 5 minutes or so you should be ok. If you are worried about overheating, warnings will appear on the iDrive screen if you get too hot. I get that there is more value if you are tracking the car, but I seriously doubt that most people here will even take their car to the track.

I have a temp gauge and honestly only look at it to see if the car is warmed up, which is almost always after five minutes of operation. Just a thought.

I went digging around for "hidden menu" information on Google, but came up with a bunch of old results, so I figured I'd post this here.

This is the thread that explains how you access the hidden menu, which includes oil/coolant temp information: http://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=715852

Five minutes barely gets our N55 to warm coolant and the oil is still on the bottom end of the gauge. It's not uncommon for it to be closer to ten to fifteen minutes to be at operating temp.

With the poor cooling of the N54 and N55, I wouldn't consider tracking a car without a temp gauge. My S52 M Coupe could only handle about 20 minutes of a 30 minute session before oil temps crept up too high. Without a gauge, how would you know what was going on before it was too late?

I know the digital speedo can be added on the display for sure. Let's see if the temperatures can be added as well.
It goes to the point that BMW can put a big glowing M 235i on the screen which has no value to car people but an analog easy to read display is gone. When you're on the track, it's a fact that it's harder to process these small numbers which is why even modern race cars project digital needles in many cases.

The idea to put it as another option on the stalk is brilliant... Just click to get to the screen when you want to look at it. How easy would it have been to do that?

Lol, well I've got the digital performance steering wheel with water and oil temps displayed so guess I'm a real "car person".

Not sure how an m235i has a history of heat soak, being out three months, and not sure why a car that was tested for 24hours straight on the ring and has been released as an m235i racing with no additional cooling needed, needs a gauge but hey.

The only way a stock N55 survived 24h on the N'Ring is if it was going about 70 kph the whole time and stopped for gas and a cool down every lap.

I did say stock. Not heavily modified to cool properly. I'm not picking on the N55, per se, BMW's in general, including M cars have historically had subpar cooling. Aside from possibly an E46 CSL, I can't imagine any BMW surviving 24h of racing conditions in stock form.
