Magnesium Levels High? OG N55

Hello All,

Is the magnesium level concerning? What parts contain magnesium? Any help is appreciated. Recent helicoil job to repair the oil pan from PO. I thought the pan was aluminum, is it maybe a magnesium composite? found what appears to be thread in the filter at one point, also pictured. 29K miles. Just added FMIC, CP, and AA catted downpipe but haven’t really driven it while I waited for this report to come back. No codes, no lights.

Those labs test are cool but somewhat ridiculous at the same time

I just use the best oil and warm my car up properly and change the oil once a year at a minimum and I focus on more important things like driving

What oil are you running exactly (lm 5w40 doesn't mean too much)?

If you found those threads in the filter they are very likely from the oil pan threads, since the pick up is right there. So those are likely from the helicoil job - no biggie, the oil filter did what it needed to do to protect the engine.

Magnesium can come from alot of places, oil additives can contain magnesium and some of them in very high concentrations in an effort to reduce reliance on calcium (preventing LSPI). For instance virgin pennzoil platnium Euro 5w40 has ~1139 ppm of magnesium as an additive by itself, and since you don't list what oil you have in the black stone test this could be a false alert because black stone isn't expecting this much magnesium. So depending on the oil you are running 1011 ppm of magnesium might mean nothing, or it can be a bit of a concern.

Edit - I just check VOA for the 2 most common lm 5w40 oils (molygen and liechthauf (idk if that is spelt correctly)) and they both have little to no magnesium, so this might be an actual issue. I don't know off the top of my head what the sources of mg are in this engine. My best advice for you is to relax and take it easy, change the oil if you haven't already done so, drive the car for awhile (the same amount as the previous test) and do another UOA to see what the results are.

I plan on doing another UOA and oil change once I hit the 1,000 mile point to compare. I’m just afraid of the worst case scenario here. It appears the metal “thread” pieces are not magnetic. I have cut up a few filters and find a small spec or two at most but I’ve gotten a handful of those same size, same curvature “thread” pieces overall since the helicoil job.

Edit: I run the leictlauf or whatever spelling LM 5W-40. Greatly appreciate the comments and will reply with any findings.

If it's not metallic that means it's very likely those are the aluminum threads from the oil pan, so yeah it's from the helicoil job.
