You'll get differing opinions but any "filter on a stick" like that is prone to heat soak.

I just bought a b58 BMS filter on a stick and I'll see how it is. I used to have he n54 dual cone intakes by BMS and they were rock solid with no issues. Hopefully the b58 version is just as nice. |

AFE is having a sale with free shipping, I just got an email about it. They make a true CAI as does Dinan. Those are the two I'd check out, think Eventuri makes one too but that's real big boy money. Both AFE and Dinan are around $600, between the two I'd take the Dinan one.

I have this one on my 240. It's not as noticeable in the cabin as I thought it would be, but once I added the JB4, the sound became a bit more pronounced. It has a nice whistle. The quality/fit of the billet is outstanding.

I have the BMS intake and love the sound and i noticed a slight improvement in turbo lag and throttle response, but that may just be a placebo effect. But all in all im happy with it.

I have it on my M235i, the sound improvement is great. You will hear the turbo spool up up and blowing off. And you would want it when tuning the car with jb4 or bm3 as it will require more air to suck in .
In my opinion the heatsoak stories are just bullsh*t, just get a proper intercooler. |

Testing was done on an N54 but same applies to this engine as well
Repost from 2012: So for this round of testing we used our 135i which happens to be 100% stock at the moment aside from the JB4 using 91 octane + NOS octane booster (~93 octane). I've been testing map 2 with a default CPS offset lately so kept that all the same between both tests. The two sets of tests were performed within 20 minutes of each other under identical conditions. First I did a 40-110mph sprint (on a private track) to evaluate the intake temperature increases throughout the run. Secondly an 8 minute (limit of JB4 logs) idle test simply logging the car with the hood down and AC on to monitor intake temperatures at rest. According to "hot air" conspiracy theorists the dual cone intake should result in higher intake temperatures during the wide open throttle run, no power gains, and heat up dramatically sitting at idle soaking up all that engine heat. First up: Stock intake system Next up: BMS Dual Cone Intake Results: I hate to say it again but the results were exactly as expected. The DCI did not produce higher air intake temperatures at wide open throttle, did not heat soak more sitting at a standstill for 8 minutes, and all around felt faster. I should also add it's certainly possible modifying your OEM airbox with an extra filter might offer minimal gains over a dual cone intake assuming you don't mind up cutting up your factory airbox but don't expect much. We've tested this as well with no significant performance gain over a DCI in 40-120mph VBOX times. You have a lot of options for intakes but three+ years later the tried and true DCI is still the intake of choice for those of us who are serious about performance...

No problems with the Dinan CAI, nice sound, felt a small throttle response increase. nothing major. Cant tell you if there is power improvement from the butt dyno.

Dinan is one of the better intakes, I prefer the closed box style intakes from a performance standpoint.
However, none of these intakes add gobs of power. Choose one based on power, sound and or looks. Also, intake air temps are largely weighted by the FMIC. However, cooler air to the turbo's would yield more efficient power. |

There have been a ton of discussion about these tests, google the original thread and im sure all the answers to your questions will be found there. If you still have questions, i will be more than happy to ask Terry. Highly doubt he will remember specifics but no harm in trying

I’ve used AFE one and BMS one.
1. Intake wont add hp 2. BMS is f***ing cheap 3. They all have good filter 4. BMS sounds much more better 5. No there was no IAT issue 6. You def get idle issue on BMS intake, but I never idle my car, its just very small vibration during idle. 7. SO I got BMS, better sound, cheaper price, just don't look good. |
