Over the weekend I did a hot idle test after driving the car for 30+ minutes, at some points, aggressively.
1) Ambient temps were ~80 degrees, 50% humidity. 2) Hood fully closed. 3) A/C not running. The A/C kicks on the main fan, thus helping move hot air out of the engine bay. I didn't hear the fan come on during the test. 4) Stock air box and filter. 5) Coolant at ~230 degrees, oil temp at ~240 degrees 6) Air temp measured post intercooler. In around 8 minutes of idling, intake temps climbed steadily just as Mike posted. Max temp was around 125 degrees. I'm not surprised that there's not much difference between stock and aftermarket intakes. Since these are turbo cars, the turbo naturally heats up the air and at idle, there's hardly any airflow through the intake to cool things. I'd be interested to see what sort of intake temps the open aftermarket intakes see at a steady 40+mph cruise. The stock intake on my M235 typically sees 15-20 degrees over ambient at a cruise once everything is warmed up. Based on everything I've read, researched, and my experience with aftermarket intakes over 20+ years of modding, racing, and dynoing, aftermarket intakes on these cars (and most every other late model make) will not net a measurable acceleration improvement. Sure, they can and do appear to gain a few HP here and there along the power curve; however, if you calculate the average power gain across the powerband, you would see that the gains are negligible, if that, therefore the car will not be measurably faster. For reference, you could gain 50whp from 6000-6300rpms on an N55 and with no other gains along the powerband, the car won't be measurably faster. It's all about average power gained across the powerband, not just a blip here and there along the line. Remember that when buying performance parts and evaulating the claims. The car may sound faster, but likely won't be faster. |

I have this intake as well. I got a super great deal from one of my customers who was upgrading to an M3. I like the sound it produces but I did experience a bit of heat soaking while on the dyno. It's not a bad 'bang-for-your-buck' part.

I'd say a good IC should handle IAT's/Heat soak. An inlet pipe on a turbo car is pretty simple, just don't have any expectations on power gains. Every setup will have a different result. For most of us, the sounds and throttle response is enough to justify the upgrade.

Regardless of intake or FMIC, the car is going to heat soak at idle - there is no air movement.
You need air to cool the FMIC and when you're driving there is more air movement under the hood too. Admittedly a different style intake may ingest cooler air from elsewhere but regardless the engine bay area and fmic will eventually heat soak without air movement. |

I bought this intake when i first ordered the 235i back in 2015.
It made it sound a bit more throaty and you can hear the turbo whine ALLOT more. Didnt feel any real performance gains. however. it did SEEM ( i didnt verify it with actual data) but it seemed like it was using allot more gas too. Was not the sound i was looking for though so after maybe 800 miles i took it off and got the cold air intake from Dinan. I posted it for sale in the forums here a while back. I still have it, if anyone is interested PM me. I'd probably let it go for insanely cheap since its been taking up space in my shop for some time now. |

I'd sooner go with the JB4 because that is where the real power gains are anyway. Intake is more for sound with minimal gain in performance. |

I feel like the problem with people getting the CEL from the BMS Intake is because they're putting too much oil on their filter.
Just a nice even coat will be fine. No need to soak it. I have had zero issues with mine. |

My car is fbo I have the injen open intake and the AA intercooler. In light traffic moving roughly 60 mph (coasting, gas, coasting, gas) I will see iat of 18-24 farenheit above ambient. If there is no one on the road and I am maintaining a constant 65-75 mph the iat is 9-15 degrees farenheight above ambient I have noticed this is true weather it is 60 degrees F or 90 degrees F. I have not really paid attention to it in stop and go traffic though. Hope that helps |

Have had the BMS intake on for over one year, now. Using the JB4, no cold start issues, no CEL's, etc.
It looks factory-ish for an open inlet pipe, which is nice. This is thanks to the cast plastic tube, which is designed to fit like OEM. The The blue filter keeps the colour scheme of the car in check, which is alright I guess, and the sound.... INTOXICATING The sound alone that you get from these intakes is worth the cost, imo. You'd be disappointed if trying to make whp with it, though, it probably does little to anything for power...
