Drivetrain Malfunction with Dinan Stage 2

In the past two months I've gotten the "Drivetrain Malfunction" message in my M235, but when I turn off the car and turn it back on it goes away. I have it at the dealer for some other issues and asked them to see if they can find anything (I took a picture of the message on the iDrive screen incase they didn't believe me).

Has anyone else heard of this happening to our cars?

Thanks

I actually get this occasionally (maybe once per month) with my JB4. I restart the car and everything is fine again. Not sure what's going on.

I had this problem with my stage 1 Dinan. They couldn't figure it out so I sold it and it's never happened since. I recommend an ecu tune for worry free performance.

Same here, I get it occasionally with my JB4. Just happened to me last night. I was in manual mode, 8th gear, started out at about 2,000 rpm and was enjoying the nice torquey pull these cars have when suddenly Drivetrain Malfunction popped up. Pulled over, turned car off and back on and the error went away.

The problem with the "Drivetrain malfunction" error is its simply a generic description and doesn't actually tell you anything. It could be a whole assortment of various things that are causing it. Until the specific codes are read its purely guesswork. It could be something as simple as a loose connection or it could also be something much more serious. Until the codes are read its anyone's guess though.

I had a similar error generated (Stage 1) and Dinan, my dealer and BMW Canada worked through the codes and turned out to be nothing. Error never returned. Error was chocked up to adaptation. Hopefully your dealer will be of similar help.

Still a happy Dinan customer. Will be moving to Stage 2 in November.

Was driving my friends JB4 335 just last week and his brought up the same code doing a 3rd gear pull . He says that means the tune read overboost and resets the car to stock until it is turned off and restarted. It was a cold night and apparently the tune hadn't adjusted yet for the air temp change. Isn't a problem with the car, just the tune protecting the vehicle. He then asked if I had shut my 235 off at 80 mph before, the look on my face was great I imagine.

Dealer called me this evening, they said it was a bad electrical actuator for the turbo. I'll see if the paperwork lists anymore details or codes when I get it tomorrow.

Interestingly enough, I have only ever gotten it on startup, never when cruising /wot. Next time I get it I'll scan the code on my phone and report back what it says.

I have seen a few of these come in to our dealership(work as a tech for bmw)

What i have found that works in the past for the problem u are describing is to have the
dealer un-plug your Dinan or Jb4 which ever ur using. perform a battery reset for at least 1 hour and 20 mins. Then Have them perform and complete programing/encoding to bring the cars Ilv up to the latest software. Once that is done, Plug back in the tune.

Haven't had a car come back yet....Knock on wood.

If your car has Warranty and you are using a Dinan Tune... You may be able to get away with them doing this on warranty for you but dont quote that on me...
Every dealership is different.
If it actually fixes the problem tho after the programming, they should be able to claim it under warranty.

I got the car back today. This is what the report said: 123511 code waist hate flap sluggish. Replaced waist gate electrical actuator drive. Diag code d1165_00000000_28_001.

It drives fine now, I'm just not sure if the Dinan upgrades caused this or if was just coincidence.

Today while I was out I got a drivetrain malfunction. I am also running dinantronics stage 2 but in a 2013 335. I scanned the code and got pending code P112F. Anyone know what this code is? I am running a ER Catless down pipe but I use the first gen BMS can flap module to auto clear the cel for that.

I think the P112F code is generated after being hoodwinked by the Dinan reliability and better engineering promise. Even the car can sense the BS!

Sorry, couldn't resist. Just teasing based on the line of BS Dinan is feeding in another thread about being the best engineered software solution and therefore charging a premium for said empty promises.

P112F - Manifold Absolute Pressure to Throttle Angle - Too High (Bank 1)

The fault is recognized when the relationship between the indicated intake manifold pressure and the mass airflow calculated based on throttle-valve angle is not correct"

Check mass airflow sensor...

+1 that was a great marketing video since 90% of their thought to be new customers didn't even bother.

I'll stick to my flash tune. Absolutely zero issues with my Enzo flash best $ I ever spent on this car.

M235i and DINAN stage 2???

Wait a minute, DINAN Stage 2 in a M235i???
I just talked to the DINAN tech at my dealership.
He said all I can do is a DINAN Stage1 on my M235i
DINAN's Web site advised the same thing.
Can anyone clear this up for me?
Thanks

Dinan Stage 2 tune has been out for a while. It's supposed to be used in conjunction with their intake and exhaust.

Just the Dinan intake. You don't need the exhaust.

Take your vehicle to the dealer and have them update the Dinantronics box to latest firmware update (1.4B) also update the vehicle's BMW integration level to the latest version. Replacing the electronic waste gate on the turbo won't fix it. Don't ask me how I know
