M235i's stock exhaust, your thoughts?

Okay after ordering my M235i I decided to add M-Performance accessories mainly because I felt the car would need certain accessories, the exhaust being the main one.

Now that I've taken delivery of my car I must honestly say that I'm impressed with the stock exhaust as it is especially in sports mode. Keep in mind that the car is still in the recommended "break-in" period, yeah I'm following that recommendation. Regardless, it should be noted that I've yet to rev the engine past 4,000 RPM. I'm still considering the M-Performance exhaust, just not sure if the car needs it. Anyone else have similar thoughts?

Depends if you want to wake neighbors or not...it doesn't provide any performance or weight benefit.

What exhaust did you go with? Any critique on the improvements or shortfalls of the new exhaust over stock?

Just installed MP exhaust. in my opinion, minimal increase in volume compared to stock. Hope it gets louder, otherwise may go with a different muffler. No real shortfalls. Fit is excellent, reused stock tips

I went with a resonator and muffler delete on my car. It sounds fantastic and not too much drone. I only have great things to say about it.

From my research so far that's the general consensus of the m performance exhaust or any axel back exhaust.

The thing is the bmw actually have great sound insulation. As if you take a video from the outside, the stock exhaust actually sounds decent. The m performance axel back exhaust only enhances it a little.

For good but not over the top sound and if you don't want drone? You'd have to go non-resonated cat-back.

And for an extra oomph you'll have to go sports-cat.

And for over the top you'll have to go catless. But you'll bound to get drone.

This is the way I see it through my research

Are you open to other options? Our Touring Edition exhaust was designed to produce a sophisticated growl without droning in the cabin. We also offer a Performance Mid Pipe to increase volume further should you desire it. Overall our goal was to produce a refined system with a pleasurable interior presence, and a nice deep tone on the outside: make your neighbors jealous, not angry.

I have the MPE and would honestly go a different route if I had to do it over (as a side note I also have a catless downpipe). I think it sounds decent under full throttle, but in lower throttle applications I find it too "buzzy". I've been used to, and love, the sound of V8's for quite some time now, so it may just be I don't care for the sound of a 6 cylinder. Take my opinion with a grain of salt with this in mind.

Personally, I like the stock exhaust just the way it is. It suits the character of the car. While the M Performance exhaust is ok, I don't think it adds that much to the drivers experience. Plus there is a LOT of other fun things to spend your hard earned cash on.

I really dislike extra loud exhausts, just noise for the sake of noise types. I'm way past the pimply faced teen race car poser stage. ;-)

Had the AWE Touring Edition on my Mk7 Gti and must say quality is top notch. Sound was very civil and never droned. Did not know AWE supports Bimmers also? Good to know and something to really consider. Thanks for sharing!

In sport mode, what you are hearing is BMW's fake engine noise piped through the speakers (Active Sound Design). Do a search and you shall find a lot of info on this.

You know what initially I hated the idea of the ASD but it's basically a built in exhaust... It's enhanced noise (well sound files) which is basically like getting an exhaust... After doing all the research axel back exhaust like the m performance has minimal increase in sound.. Basically nonexistent within the cabin with windows up... So what's the point? It's basically to show off...

In saying that I'll probably still do it lol but maybe just code in the m3/m4 sound instead

On the contrary, I'm actually referring to and hearing the actual exhaust of the car from the exterior. Personally I am impressed with the sound the "stock exhaust" produces from the exterior of the car. Only in my opinion I feel it sounds great for a stock system. It's not the loudest or greatest for stock but in my humble opinion its impressive.

I already think my car is pretty loud on cold start up, i like it quite alot.

And there is guaranteed a difference between comfort and sport aside from ASD. Sure a lot of what you hear inside the car is ASD. But there is a huge difference outside esp when you lift at 2-3000 rpm.

My M235i is still in break in period but I personally witnessed another M235i owner revving his M235i. I was standing outside the car. I was so impressed with the sound I asked if he had the M Performance Exhaust. He smiled and said no, its stock

If you plan on doing donwpipes in the future, i recommend that you wait on the exhaust. Catless + performance exhaust might be a bit too much for some people.

Thanks Mike
I'd like an upgraded exhaust but just not sure if I should spend the money on one since the stock exhaust is decent and because I rarely drive my car. It's been almost one month since I took delivery and I just barely hit 600 miles on the odometer. But the main reason i'm hesitant is because i'm on my dealers waiting list to purchase an M2 and I believe I may only keep the M235i for 12-14 months at most but that may change

Meanwhile, I enjoy every single second i'm behind the wheel of my car

I wouldn't have bought my mpe had I not gotten it rolled into my lease and gotten the visa gift card option along with it. In basically out of pocket like $300 over 3 years with install all in.

Pick up the car in 3 weeks.
