8-Speed shifting from 4th to 2nd

Question about the 2016 M235i 8 Speed.

Is there a way to shift from 4th to 2nd (Downshift by skip a gear)? Or I have to shift from 4 to 3 before I can shift to 2nd?

I drive a 6MT but from what I hear, no. You gotta shift from 4th to 3rd than to 2nd in order to get from 4 to 2.

In Sport mode, Kickdown+downshift will shift to the gear that will give you the most bang for the buck. That could mean going from 4th to 2nd. If you just want to downshift two gears I guess you have to click twice and be patient.

I am still only 600 miles on the clock. So, I'll continue to keep my driving style a little mild more now. =D

Thanks

In manual mode? No.

But if in one of the auto sport modes you can activate the kickdown which will drop to the lowest gear possible. I understand 8th to 2nd is possible.

if you are in manual mode and hit kick down while u push the downshift, it will downshift multiple gears

Tried it on my commute and dropped from 8th to 4th. Learned something today.

In my scenario, I probably can't do the kick down.

As an example, when I was driving a stick, I would heel-toe trail brake from 4th to 2nd for a quick left turn. So, by the time I hit the apex, The transition is normally very smooth with very balance weight shifting from the front to rear. I am just trying to simulate this with my M235i 8 speed.

The car is only at 700 miles only. So, I'll probably need another 2 weeks before I can start trying =(

I just tried it, I agree "Holy Crap", from 75 mph it shifted down 4 gears lightening fast. The ZF8 was one of the reasons I wanted this car, it's a great transmission.

Just so I understand: in manual mode, say 4th gear, hit kickdown and downshift at the same time? If kickdown downshifts to the lowest possible gear, what is the purpose of downshifting manually? Wouldn't kickdown already downshift 1 or 2 or more gears to be in lowest possible?

When in manual mode, you can be in say 8th gear then punch it, the car will be sluggish because in manual mode the car doesn't kick down. When you click the paddle shifters without flooring it, it clicks one gear at a time, which means you have to guess which gear to go to. With the kickdown click method it immediately launches into the optimum gear for full power then you can shift up from there.

pretty much yea, so say your in 5th gear, you floor it to kick down and pull the paddle to downshift at the same time and it will shift to the lowest possible gear, but if ur in manual mode and hit kick down without the paddle it wont do anything

Not the greatest of the ideas to floor a turboed car in 8th gear.... but you are correct.. just don't try it at home...or anywhere else
