I owned a new 2009 Z4 for 3 years and it was a fun lively car, up until the 2 convertible I missed the Z but not any more.

I owned a 2010 Z4 sdrive35i. Great car, absolutely loved it. Beautiful and very fast. I had the DSG gearbox. It was very low though and over rough roads it was very uncomfortable. The M235i has similar levels of performance, although I feel the Z was slightly quicker, but it rides bumps much better.

I have tracked both and I posted similar lap times with both cars.

Also the launch control on the Z is way better than the one on the auto M235i.

If I wanted a small 2 seat convertible sports car I'd easily pick something like a Corvette which has much more value, a Boxster that has proper handling chops, or a Jag F type that has all the emotional credential.

The 235 vert is much more car for the money. You get a reasonable trunk, back seats (which are semi worthless for humans if you're above 5'8, but if nothing else can hold some cargo or a suitcase on a long road trip).

It's fun to drive, reasonably efficient, and offers more practicality than any of the other cars at a reasonable price point when you consider a 435i convertible is much heavier and creeps into the M3/M4 price range very quickly with options.
+1 My thoughts EXACTLY.

Personally I have a 15 M235i and an E85 Z4 (never driven an E89) and I love them both. The only thing they have in common is the number of cylinders and the Roundel on the front and back. The Z is a pure sports car and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. The M235i by comparison is a small GT. It's fast, comfortable, practical, safe etc etc. I love it, but the Z is more fun.
+1. I drive both and cannot have said it any better. To the E85 Z4's credit, the sound an inline-6 delivers at WOT is intoxicating and not mention the pull from legal to go to jail speeds is the e-ticket E85 owners paid for.

If I didn't have my Z3, I would have gone for a new Z4. Their prices are high, but because they aren't selling, the lease rates, and discounts you can get on them is pretty ridiculous.

I would imagine the soft suspension can be remedied, and some light mods would turn it into a different car. But I couldn't justify having two tiny cars heh.
