I suspect this is getting close. The M2 is going to be one special car.

It gets harder and harder to wait for another year+ for this car. But I will

It is. That variant is called the M4.

Seriously, put down the crack pipe. The last thing this car needs is to be any longer, or did you miss the point of a small sports coupe?

I will need to fill the 1-year gap between my 135 lease end and the M2, but it will definitely be worth the wait. Maybe I'll just live with a beater for a year and save more for a bigger down payment.
This is my next car, and will probably be a 10-year DD for me.

And I guess I'm alone here, but I actually like those wheels. They look like what the 235 should have had instead of the ugly ones it currently comes with (the 228's are SO much better looking).

Why would you want a 7 year old engine (N54) in the M2? The N55 coming in the M2 will not be the same engine as the one that comes in the standard 2-series. It's getting a T designation engine (formerly Tu). The reason so many people preferred the N54 was because it had better internals. On a dyno, the two engines were within a couple percentage points of each other across the board (until you started tuning). It is extremely unlikely that the N55B30T0 (the rumored M2 engine code) will fall short of the N54 in that department.

At this point, anyone who still idolizes the N54 is just waxing nostalgic. The version of the N55 we get in the M2 will be superior to the N54 from the 1M in every measurable dimension.

Get an E36 M3 (a clean one). They've already bottomed out in price, and if you take care of it, I'm sure you can get what you paid for it. Either that, or if you can live with a Civic or Corolla for a year

If/when I buy a new car (this will be my first one), my intentions are to also keep for years and years to come, so the M2 better be good. Otherwise, I'll have to dig through BMW old ///M car catalog. Wouldn't know which one to pick though.

Agreed. I think the main reason people like the N54 over the N55 is that it is more tunable in the aftermarket, but that comes at the expense of reliability (N55 had better reliability than N54, at least in the 135's).

I personally wouldn't mind an N55, as I would only likely do a mild tune if any at all. I don't think this car will need it (then again, who really needs more power?

You don't know what "our down the crack pipe" means? sheesh, what century are YOU living in?

Actually it originally said OUT, not OUR, which was simply a typo that has been corrected (should have been "PUT"). I'm sure you understand typos though, since you made one yourself in your quoting me.

Idiotic? Boneheaded? No, Idiotic and boneheaded would be wanting any larger dimensions on this car (besides those nice, wide hips).

Then again, maybe you were being sarcastic. If so, that's cool - you just failed at being clear.

Clear sarcasm would be something like saying "put down the crack pipe". You see, nobody, least of all me, thought you actually were holding a crack pipe, and that is made obvious by the patent absurdity of the statement itself.

Now, one could argue that asking for another foot of length is also a patently absurd statement, but the fact that there are people who want a bigger car (M4 buyers), makes the statement actually quite realistic, and therefore a poor choice for sarcasm.

So, sir, please now pick up the crack pipe, because you need to seriously relax!

Cheers!

I like the wheels too.

Hell, go out during the BMW xmas sale and get a nice CPO 135 or something. By the time your m2 shows up it'll be time to trade it. Or maybe everyone's not like me and gets a different car every 9-15 months? LOL

OYE - I need a new hobby.

Love that car. While the E30 M3 was what got me into BMW's in general (the 8 series too) a long long time ago, the E39 M5 was my favorite car when it came out. It just blew my mind how car can do absolutely everything so good. I still break my neck when I see one, especially in Lemans Blue or Imola Red.

Having said that, it's a V8, and since my E92 M3 is going to by my companion till death do us part, I'd want something different and compact. Maybe a Z4M? But right now, the M2 is still the top of my obtainable car list.

Do we sometimes confuse nostalgia with enthusiasm? I am asking sincerely. The current M3 is about the same size with better chassis, suspension, more powerful engine, better brakes, better technology, more comfort and more performance on and off the track. If you agree, what is lost in transition or translation?

As a side note: E39 M5 was my favorite as well, although I never had the chance to drive it, so I have no first-hand experience.

Reading between the lines since last ranting it sounds as though LED headlight options are going filter throughout the entire BMW range.

Yep, totally with you on all points.

There are two perspectives from which we have to consider tuning though:

1) Tuning ability: the ability of the motor to withstand higher boost levels, and the ability of the turbocharging system to generate higher boost.

2) Tuning availability: the ability of tuners to deliver software.

For #1, the N54 was in a good position because of it's better internals. I don't know the specifics, but the large turbo on the N54 wasn't much to write home about. Upgrades like the RB Turbo prove that the N54 was capable of much more than the factory turbos could deliver. The N55 was lacking on the quality of internals, but there's good reason to expect BMW will remedy that with the T0 variant of the N55 coming in the M2.

As for #2, that's a whole other ballgame. BMW has thrown down the gambit on the software side of things. We basically have to rely on a security flaw that results in some significant information disclosure in order to get around the software. Otherwise, we're stuck with piggyback tunes.

It's no different than why still so many people love the E30 M3 (never driven one myself either). A new Camry is probably faster than that thing.

To me, it's not always all about the numbers. The way the car looks, the way the car sounds (E39 M5 with muffler delete anyone?), the way it drives (that steering feel was on point). All that for less than $20k. What's there not to love?

P.S. I assure you the F80 is not more comfortable than the E39 also.

This car's going to be sweet. Love the render. Have my name on the list at the dealership. Drove my buddy's tuned M4 the other day - loved the power and torque. I'll judge the difference when I get my VT2-625 installed next week If the M2 comes with a detuned S55, BMW take my money!!
