They've been hinting this for the Chinese market for the past year or so. Doubtful that a FWD 2-series would sell very well against its competition here in the US.

I don't know a low "starting" price around $30k and a prestige badge does have an audience in the US

Ugh. Inverted "L" shaped tail lights. About as silly, unorthodox, and undesired as the inverted kidney grilles on the X2. At least it will be FWD!

Not saying it won't sell at all - it will have a limited audience. I suspect they'll put a 2-series GC body on the same Mini platform as the X2. There are some people who wouldn't know the difference, but a lot of current BMW owners would. Competitors would likely be the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-class, and possibly some of the higher-end Asian brands. I haven't seen very many A3s and A-Class cars in my neck of the woods.

No more convertible. That’s all I needed to hear to get one while I still could. The thing I’ve been thinking most about is that they won’t be able to use the inline 6 engine in a fwd chassis so I’m thinking they’ll be using a hopped up 4cyl turbo like they have in the x2 35i.
Not that it can’t be a great car but they will have an uphill battle. No more rwd. No more inline 6. No more convertible. |

The next generation G42 2 Series Coupe and G87 M2 will remain rear wheel drive with both 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder options while the F44 2 Series Gran Coupe will be front wheel drive.
The 2 Series convertible will indeed be discontinued after the current generation F23 ends production, leaving the Z4, 4 Series, 8 Series, or i8 as the choices for a BMW convertible. https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=901686
