Carbon Interior - My progress; Self made.

Hiyo.

I got a little bored as I am waiting for my OEM BMW Performance interior to arrive, I decided a few days ago I'd wrap my current OEM in carbon.

I wanted to just try one piece, as this is my first time wrapping interior trim in carbon. First off, I am by no means an expert. I have played around with resins and fiberglass before and I figured I would give this a shot. I simply attempted with one piece first (driver side door handle) and currently still in the process.
Started by taking the piece off and cleaned with dish soap.

Sanded down with 120 Grit - 240 Grit

Measured out the carbon. Gave my self an extra ~1" in each end.

Getting ready to coat with black base coat

Base coat applied, using a heat gun to get out all of the little bubbles

At this point, I never took a picture of the carbon being raw. I had to relay the carbon due to me not letting the base coat sit long enough.

This was after two coats of top resin and then sanding down the edges to make them flush with the piece.

Test fitting, no clear coat and no sanding yet. This was simply to ensure everything fit without a problem.

I've now just sanded down from 140 - 1600 grit. Wet sanding took place at 400 grit and up. I broke threw at one spot so I had to go and reapply resin and now I wait for it to dry. Once it's dry, I'll re sand that area and apply the clear...

Stay posted.

How did you remove the handle from the door? I read you pry from the bottom of the handle and work your way up to the top. Any plastic clips I need to be careful about in getting them to release?

Yup, first time. I've picked up a UV resistant clear from my local auotbody shop supplier.

Started from the bottom with a trim pulling tool. Took a little force but work your way up slowly. I damaged one clip on the driver door but I put it back in and things are fine.

I can, you would just have to be responsible for shipping. I can pick the set up in North Dakota. Will take one week turn around.

OP this is really cool! Great job.

I may have to consider in the future, since I like the glossy CF interior a la new M3/M4, and the current one is more alcantera

I wasn't happy with how the first handle came out so I went for a go against my drivers door handle today while waiting for the resin to dry on the passenger one. Here is the step I took to ensure all the end are bonded to the surface of the original handle.

That looks like it will turn out great, especially for a first time!

Slightly off topic as I realize it's a totally different process and not real CF, but figured those doing CF might have researched alternatives. Saw an old Wheeler Dealers w a Range Rover where they painted the trim black then floated a CF textured film in some sort of solvent and dipped the parts. Before I do a ton of research, anyone know the name of the process and/or if the results are any good? Looked great in TV but then again anything can look good on TV and look terrible in person.

Well today I sanded down that first coat of resin.

Applied second coat and now we look like this.

Well I was going to clear these today but I went to final sand on both and I had a spot of carbon break threw. I knew I was really light on the top coats so I decided to put one more coat on both before getting ready to spray. Figured I would let you see them before I spray. This is only half the gloss the clear will have.
